Title: wireless network printer
Post by: unlovedwarrior on September 05, 2006, 12:52:08 PM
ok i was on the phone for almost 2.5 hours last night with dell tring to get my printer hooked up so i can print over the wireless network i put up last night. but dell said the only way to use the printer was to turn off the firewalls on both computers. i think there is a better way than that.

both dells

both xp home sp2

both clean

ones a desktop (where the modem and router are)

the other is my laptop

Not much to go on, but just some thoughts:

If you use MAC address filtering on your router, make sure you added the MAC address of the printer to the allowable list

Check your firewall, make sure the internal IP address of the printer is allowed to pass through.

How is this all setup? Is there a printer server that needs to be configured?

I'm sure others will have some more ideas/solutions.

You're right in thinking that the Dell advisers (as usual) don't know what they're talking about, not if you deviate from their "script".  Have you enabled file and print sharing on the desktop computer?  If so you then need to share the printer from the desktop (right click-->sharing) and install it from the laptop.  (Add new printer-->from network...)  MAC/IP filtering doesn't apply in your case.  Windows manages all the connection issues.

If you get no joy, it may be that you need to open the NETBIOS ports on your desktop, but lets face that if we come to it.

You should be able to configure your firewall with "exceptions" to let your printer work.

I don't have PC-Cillin Internet Security and Zonealarm is set up on my laptop (which isn't on at the moment), but you should be able to get into each program, poke around in Preferences / Options / etc. and configure your printer there.

Sorry I can't be more specific.  I don't run wireless printer servers on my network and had a dickens of-a-time getting one set up on my landlords home network  :-X
