Title: no "Selection" option for printing
Post by: Kando on January 09, 2009, 09:11:15 AM
I am heading out to look at a computer and that seems to be the main problem. When text or pictures are highlighted and the owner goes File>Print there is no option, not even greyed out, to just print the selection when the print box comes up.

Windows XP sp3
IE7

She has Firefox but is unable to get email using it, another problem but not as important.

The printer is connected via usb, and she can print full pages, just not the selections.

Cut and paste into a Word document will work but that is an extra set of steps that she does not want to go through each time.

Anyone seen this before?

Thanks

When text or pictures are highlighted ...
What software are we talking about here?

She is highlighting from Yahoo mail. Possibly direct from web pages, but definitely from her mail.

So, she's using IE, right?  When she selects the print command, does the print setup screen show an option to only print the selection?  I gather the answer is no, but I'd like to confirm that.

It has to be copied and pasted to enable the Print option...

Exactly, she gets the print setup box, but there is no radio button to print "Selection". As for the copy and paste, she has printed straight from the mail until about a week or so ago.

Hmm, I find I can merely highlight text on a web page, select File, Print, and then I can select the option to print only the current selecition.  See image below:

Both IE and Firefox work this way on my Vista notebook PC.

Sorry Soybean you are correct...i was right clicking the highlighted text and did not see a print option...File/Print is indeed available.

I will be seeing her either this weekend or early next week depending on the weather. I will let you know what the situation is, with a screenshot, afterwards.

Ok, this is the latest.

WinXP
IE6

Selected text from a web page and file>print shows Selection greyed out. The option to print the page is there.

This also happens in Yahoo mail.

You can print the selection from a word document.

Full pages are not a problem.

Any idea why Selection is greyed out?

I was trying to print a selection myself, I selected it, press file, then print...And the selection radio box is greyed out...any help? I'm using Firefox 3 with the Black Steel extension.

Still not able to print a Selection. The copy and paste is way too much just for a few lines or maybe small picture.

Really would like to get this one solved.

Thanks

Got a suggestion to try CTRL + P, instead of File>Print, which I passed on. I will let you know what happens.

Just spoke with the user and using CTRL + P to print selected text or pictures does not work in IE6. The dialog box comes up but the Selection option is STILL grayed out.

I am totally stumped on this one, any ideas?

Thanks

OK, if after percolating in the gray cells no answer is forthcoming, does anyone know of any third party software that would do basically the same thing? Maybe a plug in of some kind? Having to start up Word or to keep it open just seems silly to the user.

Thanks

At the top Right in Yahoo Mail there is a Print icon....works here.
Have her try that

Thanks Patio, you pointed in the right direction. It is a two part solution though.

Use the print link as you said, but, when the print dialog box comes up you have to close it, reselect what you want to print, and THEN go File>Print and the selection option is available.

Not quite the pain of cut and paste into Word, but it will work.

Thanks to all for answers.

I had this problem and found it was related to installing a new printer. There was an option on the File menu that had to be deselected to allow the Selection option to become available. Just so you know.
