Title: More People On The Forum?
Post by: GX1_Man on February 10, 2007, 07:59:56 AM
In the last few days there have been more members and guests online htan there have been for over a year. What's up with that? I don't recall any sizzling topics.

People lurking, looking for up to the moment commentary on Vista, perhaps?

I believe it's due to a lot of changes I've been doing recently. Some of the changes I believe that have affected this are:

Updated user creation - Think this change has helped a lot. Before when creating a new account you would first verify the e-mail, would then send you a randomly generated password, you would have to enter that password, and then change it. Now you can simply enter your password in the user creation page and only have to verify the e-mail is a valid e-mail. I would like to get rid of that too, but as many know lots of trouble makers that would like me to do that... I know on my end this has helped TREMENDOUSLY because I was getting on average 3-12 e-mails from users being able to log in using the randomly generated password, since changed 4-5 days ago I've only got 1.

Opened up /CGI-BIN/ - In the past the robots.txt has blocked all search engines except Google (needed unblocked for CGI-BIN pages ads) from indexing the /CGI-BIN/ on Computer Hope. Of course since the forums are in the directory it too was blocked. This is now removed all search engines can now query Computer Hope and as can be seen from the stats yesterday 32 search bots were indexing the forums. Believe with forum results being found on other search engines this will also bring more entry points and users into the forums.

Promoting - Been promoting the forums a lot more recently.

I'd like to say it's also all the other minor updates and modifications I've been doing too, but don't think that's the case. I think the above three things are the biggest factors.

Finally, I think also more users are also realizing that the Computer Hope forums get a lot of questions answered very quickly and almost always with good answers, thanks to all the great dedicated Computer Hope forum members.  ;D

Likely this could also be a contributing factor, the forums have been having a lot of good Vista posts.

One additional possible contributing factor is the lack of ads. You visit almost any other forum you'll find at least one ad or those VERY annoying in-text ads that bring up a pop-up window when you move your mouse over the text. The Computer Hope forums are 100% ad free.  8-)

Btw, I can't even count the amount of times I've been approached by companies wanting to do embedded text ads, most of the e-mails and phone calls have been from multiple intellitext reps, but I will NEVER do those ads on the forums or on the site.. ugh, worst thing EVER!

Yes, I noticed a lot more people online, members and guests.
I figured it was just because of the update, and I was partly right I guess.
And I bet it's a snowball effect - as more people get quick, good answers here, they recommend more people, who then recommend more and so on.

It's probably due to those that have 7 or 8 aliases...

Hehe.
True.
I wonder how many people there are among us with more than one account?
I bet there are a lot.
I for one just have this one.
If you have more than 1 account, why?  And what is it?
Just curious.

I suspect that most of those with multiple aliases are compensating for undersized genitalia.

I can honestly say I sell this site all the time to my contacts. The selling point is that u guys are friendly and not too  (sarcastic~!)  :D   It is great to see the volume as of late,  you people ( u know who u are)  should be congratulated~!   ;)

(nice to see the guy in red around too)

I tell my friends about the site too, mainly so I don't have to do one on one personal tech support all the time (i.e. going round to their houses and fixing their PCs for free, and getting blamed when it goes wrong.
It is nice to see the increased volume of traffic, and nice to see the admin on a lot more and posting too, rather than banning people lol.

I have also noticed quite a few more people online.

I must say, I am very glad of this.

Nathan, did you take a look into that modification I was telling you about that lets guests post by typing in obscufated letters/numbers so they dont have to register?
I think it would be useful, but it would defer some users from registering.

Really? I sometimes use an alias with no mod privileges. That way I can see if the methods we use to only allow Mods to do certain things work with my own eyes. It's paranoia, but it's not hurting anything. :)

How did I know that was coming? ;)

EDIT: Oops, my alias was on Zylstra's site. I used "Ghost of Dilbert" to check things out as a non-Mod. Hmm. I wonder...?

Hmm. My ghost says that the first thread in the Other section appears to be a sticky. It's as if the Bar and Grill made a hole in the forum for non-mods and the latest thread fills it. :o

Oh no, its back again :o

Having more than one username if you are an administrator, web developer, or a moderator, can be a good thing just so you can see the forum as it is to a regular user. For example, on my website which seems to be 50/50 abandoned, I have more than one username so I can test features as a regular user, since I have had problems with the way its displayed before....
