Have you installed any new software or hardware just prior to the occurring?

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME is not a good sign.

...don't want to mess around with the F2/F12 buttons on start up.

Is F2 = Setup?
Is F12 = Repair?
If F2 is setup (BIOS), go there and see if hard drive is recognized.  If it is, then restart and do F12.
I am hoping there is a hidden repair partition on the hard drive which sorta takes the place of the Windows CD.

1.  i think it's recognised not sure what i'm looking at as i know nothing about this stuff
2.  I can find Internal HDD lit up in the Boot Order but that seems to be all i see of the Hard Drive
1.  You will, that's why you're here.  Trying to see if hard drive is recognized as being there.
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME can mean bad hard drive or something crashed with Windows.
2.  That's good.  Hard drive is probably fully functional.  BTW, I always set boot order to CD 1st and HDD 2nd, but since you have no boot CD, it won't matter.

Move on to F12 (is that Repair?).  You may lose all your data, but what else can you do?  It's not working at all now.

 1  Internal HDD
 2  CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive
 3  Cardbus NIC
 4  Onboard NIC
 5  Diagnostics

I don't understand.  Is F12 repair?  What does the list follow from?  It must ask you something 1st before giving you the list.

F12 is Boot menu
F2 is set up

Try #5-Diagnostics.
Look for the Windows CD, you will probably need it.

when i brought it it was a refurbished laptop with a genuine copy of windows xp pro but i didn't get a CD to go with it.

dianosic's shows a list of stuff that's passed or fail

so far
--Start DST Short Test--
Test Results : Failed
Error Code : 1000-0146
MSG : Unit 0:DST Log contains previous error(s)

some other tests have passed

but now it's telling me..... No Diagnostic Utility Partition Found.  To run diagnostics, insert your dell "Drivers and Utilities" CD then select OK

I have found a Drivers & Utilities version 8.01 CD not sure if it's a dell CD thou

If you contact Dell and provide them with the Service Tag # (located on the bottom), you can get all the CD's for a small charge or maybe for free.  You can download all updates for free.  The Service Tag is the key item to know.

Start your computer by inserting the Windows startup disks or the Windows installation disk if your computer can start from the CD drive. Or go into your recevery console.
When the Welcome to Setup screen appears, press R to select the repair option.
If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the Windows installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
Type the administrator password when you are prompted to do this.

Note If no administrator password exists, press ENTER.
At the command prompt, on the drive where Windows is installed, type chkdsk /r, and then press ENTER.
At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER to restart your computer.
After you repair the volume, check your hardware to isolate the cause of the file system damage.

Has this machine been dropped recently ? ?
You may want to try removing and re-seating the HDD...

Apology accepted.

What does it say on the CD's and do you know what happened to the originals ? ?
Sometimes system CD's if copied and/or done incorrectly are just drink coasters...

Hi,  well the CD'S just says "win xp pro"  both have been copyed so i presumed that there the copy of the real CD.   When i brought the laptop it was refurbished  and i didn't get a CD but i did get the sticker at the back with the code on so i know it's a real version of windows

You need to borrow a real XP CD to do the re-install...i wouldn't trust the burned copies no mattter what they say on them.
Most XP CD's cannot be simply be copied and burned and this is where most people screw up...

NOTE: The XP Version and installed SP's need to match to do an install...however if doing a format and clean install only the Versions need to be the same.

Best of Luck.

PS>. Make sure to collect the drivers for re-install...this is especially critical with laptops to run properly...

You will need to back up any data on that drive that you want to save BEFORE doing any of this as it will be gone when you start the process...
If you need direction on backups post back for more info...

Ok
I ran my Diagnostics  and every thing passed except  --Start DST Short Test-- which failed Eorror Code 1000-0146    MSG : Unit 0 :DST Log contains previous error(s).
So I continue A white box appears "No Diagnostics Partion Found. insert CD to resart the system and BOOT off the CD."      so i press OK
I got my CD to work "not the real CD but the copy" and i'm left with a few options and not sure which buttons to press next.
Options i'm left with are as follows... 1 - To set up Windows XP, press Enter
2 - To repair a windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press 8
3 - To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3
Any Help from here would be Great thanks
