Title: Doube .exe.exe copy
Post by: jcarr on March 02, 2007, 01:10:35 AM
Whenever i try to execute a file, e.g. "myFile.txt", it SHOULD open in Notepad, but all that happens is a file called "notepad.exe.exe" appears in the same folder as the one im trying to open, and the file doesnt even open!!

Its driving me nuts... can anyone help me..?

EDIT: And then somtimes when i open it, it opens the "Open With.." thing, and i select the program and it doesnt show up!

I am running winXP SP2 if that helps

What would help more is knowing what virus and spyware protection you are using, what happened prior to all of this, etc.

WORM_VODNI.A -Maybe

I would download and run AVG anti virus.

And make sure you update the virus definitions.

My guess:

It's the hallmark of the Renama worm (it's name is appropriate, don't you think)?

You should talk to your PC about practicing safe surfing.  Just as people should not try unprotected sex, computers should not try unprotected surfing.  Viruses or unplanned downloads are the usual consequence.

Thanks for your input everyone :d

i finally managed to get AVG to work.. I discovered yesterday that the .exe's arent actually being deleted, just relocated and renamed. I ran AVG and several trojans were found in DLL's in the computer and they were eradicated. Now only time will tell if it stops.

EDIT: and in regard to the "safe surfing" thing, i am now making sure everyone in our house knows that they have to scan everything they download before opening it, or they will suffer my wrath!  ;D lol

I will let you know when ive had any significant changes

thanks heaps!

Jcarr:

I'd suggest using your Windows CD or the PC manufacturer's System Restoration CD to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows, as your system is chronically infected.  Trojans can steal passwords, credit card numbers, use your PC to make phone calls for which you will receive the bill, etc.

If you don't want to reinstall Windows, i'd suggest purchasing an antivirus program such as Norton Antivirus or the McAfee program.

They cost more than AVG, but, in my opinion, they are worth it.
