Title: HELP! MAJOR PROBLEM
Post by: FireChaser on November 27, 2005, 05:35:45 AM
Hi, i am on windows XP using a fairly old computer and i have got this BIG problem :o:
Wot happens is that internet slows down, and the computer turns off, and then the hardrive starts making a beeping sound :o. The only way to stop the beeping is to cut the power, or cold down the power button. If the computer isn't left for about 5 mins whenever u try to turn it on again it starts making the beeping sound.
I am pretty sure it is an internet related problem.

PLZ HELP!

Hard drives don't beep. What you describe sounds like a heat problem.

Head to this FREEWARE (http://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=1;action=display;num=1128543919=post#7) page, install Everest and see what your processor temperatures are like. Sounds like a heat problem.

Can you see if your fans are running properly?

If my HD made a sound like that, I would suspect it is failing. But I still think your problem is heat related. Open the case and blow out all the dust bunnies and make sure all the fans are running. I suspect the PSU itself is overheating.

oh, if the temperatures are too high how can i make sure they don't get high again?

The fans need to be running properly and there needs to be sufficient air around the computer. Vents need to be clean too.

Maybe the Processor heat-sink needs re-seating but I wouldn't do that until you are sure of the rest.

Actually I heard a HDD beep.  I didn't believe it so I told my friend to bring it over with him and surely enough it was beeping when in my PC.  I believe it was a maxtor.  I've never heard that before from an HDD and I still haven't another one do it since.  Don't really know what it was, but I do know his HDD was dead.

Maxtor manufactures hard drives.  Have you looked into the others ideas that it is a heat problem yet?  That notion seems the most logical to me as well.

Also what do you use in the way of anti-virus and anti-spyware protection?
