Is the hard drive recognized in setup?

Are the date and time right in setup?

Did you make any changes to the computer right before this started?

The most probable cause for this is that the system RAM is not conducting. This can happen if the RAM is misaligned due to jerks or there is dust clotted around it. Take the RAM out and clean it’s contact edges with a eraser. Also dust away the RAM socket in your motherboard. Dirt can sometimes build up in ‘drifts’ around the memory sticks and the video, sound or modem card slots. If possible use the compressed air to blow it out, avoid to use the brush here. Place it again tightly and reboot.

Its a dell Inspiron 531 Windows Home Premium Vista. I have the original operating system disk but it didn't boot when I ran it in D drive.

Yes when I try to boot with the original system disk it jumps to screen showing boot failure. The operating system was previously entered and the computer was previously in good working order.

Before you proceed on reinstalling, have you backup all files/documents?

The time & date are right. The reading on F2 is Floppy A 1.44M 3.5in, SATA O ST3250820AS, SATA 1 PBDS DVD +/- RW DH 16WIS, SATA 2 NONE, SATA 3 NONE, HDD SMART Disabled.
