I defrag my drivea alot. I noticed my work computer has very little of the green "unmovable" files, but my hame computer seems to have a ton of disc space occupied by these files. Both are XP - however one is Home, and one is Pro. What do these files contain, and why so much on my home pc?

i think its because xp pro has more features/files that deal with how your computer works then home does and thats why you see more green. i think the green are system files. have you tried going windows defrag for detailed description on the what the colored lines mean?

my home computer is the one w/ all the green - that's the wierd thing. Could it be Windows updates?

I'm at work, but according to my wife, the last Windows security update was 2/14/07, and the last Windows Hotfix was 3/16/07.

the update at home didn't work - per the wife, all 18 updates failed. it did work here at the office, though

Is the OS on your computer at home a legitimate version (from an original CD - not a copy - and not already on another computer)?
Is your home computer virus and spyware free?
If you naswered "no" to the above questions...this can cause problems with Windows Update.

what protection do you have

spybot search and destroy, spyware blaster, Norton Anti virus

beyond all this, is the update even going to do anything about the large amount of unmovable files?

get superantispyware and scan in safe mode

I have 9 blocks of green that are wider than yours. ???

I personally tried the updates and they do not work. error 0x80246008 - any help?

Green files = paging file and hibernation file.
What are the sizes of each on each PC?
"Control Panel - System - Advanced - Settings (first one) - Advanced - Change" for your paging file.
And "Control Panel - Power Options - Hibernation" for your hibernation file.
Basically, one of your computers has more space devoted to one or both of these files than the other.
Neither the hibernation or paging file can be moved because it is always in use.

Background Intelligent Transfer Service was disabled. That's what I get for drinking beer and tweaking profiles at the same time! however, I still have the original problem w/ green space. In response to Calum - Paging file is 6143 MB
Hibernation file is 2048 MB
Hibernation is not activated, though
Now that I have caught up on all the updates I was missing, I have even less available space :P
Is there a solution? The unmovable files are taking over !!!! :'(

The swap file is the Virtual Memory file.
My Computer - Advanced - Performance - Advanced - Virtual Memory
Set it so the C: drive has a Custom size,
initial size 2 MB maximum size 50 MB
then set it so that the D: drive has a Custom size
initial size 1.5 times the RAM size, maximum 1.5 times the RAM size.
This did it for the green areas! Thanks to all who helped! You are the best!!!!

Where did you get all that from all of a sudden?
Anyway, you're welcome if what I said helped at all.
6Gb was a fairly large swap file, you should definitely have reduced it which I gather you have done now.
