Title: [SOLVED with Dial-a-fix] Microsoft Windows Update Fails
Post by: stringo0 on April 12, 2008, 03:34:42 PM
Hi,

I recently fixed some trouble with my computer with your help - and I think my drive might be failing - seatools does not detect it, but it boots into windows and I am not having any trouble with it.

Here's what I did to fix a critical error I was receiving, upon Patio's recommendation I think - Used the Windows CD to repair Windows to fix a critical error with the Login services.

So:

1. Repaired Windows with the Windows CD.
2. Windows Update now fails to update anything.

When I tried a manual update of one of them, Windows Installer 3.1, I get an "Access Denied Error"

Any suggestions on fixing windows update?

I've been trying suggestions from this thread - http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/700401-cannot-install-windows-updates.html

I just used the tool. First, before using the tool:

Tried manually installing the Windows Installer 3.1 Update and SP 2 Update - I get an "Access Denied" Error. Then I tried in Safe mode. Same thing.

While using the Dial-a-fix tool, I got 2 major errors for a number of files, ALL of which are listed below:

Using Dial-a-fix

An event was unable to invoke any of the subscribers
Registration of ________(for all the files below) - 0x80070005 - Access Denied
-Repair Permissions found in the tools dialog

msxml3.dll
danim.dll
cdfview.dll
datime.dll
lmrt.dll
mshtml.dll - Acess Denied - The program said not sure about this error

80004005 - Unspecified error - This object might be corrupted try SFC /purgecache SFC /scannow in the Tools Dialog or try to find a replacement
msdaora.dll
msdaosp.dll
msdaps.dll
msdasql.dll
oledb32.dll
sqloledb.dll
sqlxmlx.dll

What is the Tools Dialog? UPDATE: Found the tools button on the software, will try the recommendations

UPDATE: All errors fixed, tool works properly now.

Following the suggestions after using the tool,

Download/Install Windows Update v3.

Download/Install the 927891 patch

When trying to install Windows Update v3 I get a note saying it's already installed.

When trying to install the patch, I get an error saying prerequisites are missing :?

Did you run SFC /purgecache SFC /scannow command?

Did you run SFC /purgecache SFC /scannow command?

Yes I did.

I was not able to install the ones mentioned, however I was able to install Windows Update Installer 3.1, which I couldn't before.

I think the Dial-A-Fix might have fixed it - Windows Auto Update is downloading updates, will give a heads up as to whether it's working or not.

Thanks so much for the help!

Good News: Dial a fix fixed the problems. Quoting the post from the other thread to help folks with the same problem.

The following fixed my problem, from http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=68881

Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:

    * Windows Installer
    * Windows Update
    * All the Registration Center options

Uncheck Empty System32\Catroot 2

Do NOT press Flush SoftwareDistribution.

Click GO and wait until it is done... Reboot may be needed.

Thanks again for the help and God Bless '_^
