If you deleted all partitions on your hdd then there is nothing to boot from.

What are you trying to achieve and precisely what have you done so far :-?

Partition Logic - Have you used this program before :-?

Are any error messages being displayed :-?

Run Partition Logic again and the Main Page should show the drives and partitions.  Can you post the screenshot you get please :-?

When you mention 2 X 40gig drives do you mean two physical 40gig hdd's or do you mean two 40gig partitions on one physical drive :-?

Do any of the limitations shown here (http://partitionlogic.org.uk/about/index.html) apply to your system :-?  e.g. your hdd type (sata?) or file system etc..?

Yes, yes & yes.

From what you say I gather you have one physical hard drive which used to have a partition which held your XP system and that's the one you deleted.  The 4gb discrepancy is probably a recovery partition (80gb - 76gb) installed by the laptop supplier.

Hang in there for advice from someone more knowledgeable than me.

ok, thankyou, what partition software would you recommend and do you think it is a good idea for me to do this being as the laptop is only 2 days old and under warranty?

thanks

A full version of XP can do all the partitioning, I'm not sure about these restore disks.
A curse on these people who sell half baked OSs to save a buck. >:(

You hosed a new laptop in 2 days? The first thing you need to do is be able to reload Windows. If you boot with the Acer restore CD #1 nothing happens? If this is the case then you need to contact Acer pronto and see what to do.

I don't know why you started playing with partitioning software, but it is a bad idea for a novice and can get you just these results. Why did you think you needed such a thing? Having the two large partitions on there as when you got it is an excellent long term solution. You really don't need add on software and without a genuine XP CD you cannot partition with that restore set.

If it's 2 days old i would be exercising the Full Warranty...they don't need to know that you hosed your own system playing with powerful tools not completely understood by the user...
