I have a HP desktop, Vista os, 3 gb ram, 250 hdd, 3800 AMD Athlon dual core, 32 bit operating system. I don't use my system for gaming, only net surfing, e-mail, that sort of thing. My son has my space. I'm consuming 60 to 63 % of ram. What can I do to reduce that? Thanks for any help.

i don't really understand this part

It is normal for Windows to use spare RAM. It is released when needed.
-
Perfectly normal for Vista...it uses what's there.

And XP and 2000 and win9x.

Thanks everyone.

Vista is different.
Yes, Vista treats system memory like a cache much more aggressively and effectively than any other version of Windows. But you got "Where does my free RAM go?" questions before. Anyhow you can turn Superfetch off.
-
in Vista with smartfetch there really is no such thing as "Free" RAM; or it tries to mimize it's presence.
-
Very good explanation here: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000688.html
In simple terms, all OSes before Vista have all RAM not being actually used laying dormant, listed as "available" memory.
Vista "caches" ALL available RAM, so it's ready for immediate use. Almost nothing is listed as available/free, ready for EVENTUAL use. All RAM is boiling for you already.
Vista's motto: RAM not used = wasted RAM.
The biggest difference between superfetch, and prefetch is the fact, that in case of superfetch, the most used applications never leave the RAM. If you use Firefox, for instance, every day, before you even start it, the RAM portion needed to run Firefox is already there, allocated.
-
The performance advantages really only show themselves if you have more than 4GB of RAM, and because of that, you should be running a 64-bit version of Vista to see all of that extra RAM.
-
Maybe, I'm getting wrong impression, but if you read at my link, the amount of RAM really doesn't matter. What matters is the way it's handled.
-
try to use this goto start-run-regedit-HKEY_CURRENT_USER-Control Panel-don't load- and right click then click string value then input "memcp32.cpl32"
then after that right click the one you input and choose modify "yes"
logoff computer
i don't know yet if this will work
just i said just try^^
-
ignore the above misinformation.

People who post stuff that says "Monkey about with your registry like so: [blah blah blah] Oh, by the way I don't know if it works" are in my opinion, DICKHEADS. Are you listening, homeincome? (Suspicious user name)
-
for me the red flag was the fact that there is no memcp32.cpl32, and additionally I would wonder aloud how not loading a Control panel file would somehow improve RAM usage.
mayu as well say, "here download my special program and put it in the run key but then change permissions so you can't access the key then reboot oh btw I dunno if this will work.
