Recently, I tried downloading stuff from the net and the download rate with Internet Download Manager was about 50k. (about 100k on lucky days) But when I check my speed using the online speedometer, it stated that my download speed was 770 kbps and 394 kbps for uploading. Can anyone explain to me why the big difference in the real thing and the test?

Btw, I'm using Streamyx (I think it's 1.0M package.)

Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) it will tell you the reason. They did limitated that.

You can try to check 2wire.com or speedtest.net to see your speed

the weird thing is that quite often, the download speed can get to as low as a few kbps and that is already with download booster..

Download Booster or "Speed Boosters" never work for what they say about speeding up your connection speed.

Well, my connection speed is very slow and I am not sure why.
But what i meant was, when I did the speed test, i got like 770 kbps for my download speed but my download speed is never anywhere near that. The highest I got was like 100 kbps ++ and quite often it can get to as low as around 10 kbps. Why is that so?

Note: When you download files from a website, you are downloading/transferring the files from their server to your computer.
Why is that so?
Well, because of the following factors:
Your bandwidth
Their bandwidth
Your download speed
Their upload speed
Any upload limits they may set on their server
Latency between servers

Is there any way where I can improve it? Coz it's kinda annoying when you're trying to download something and it takes forever to finish..

Contact your ISP, they will give you an answer.
My conclusion is: You can get as much as you pay! (so if you want more internet speed you have to pay more).

This isn't always true. Some internet providers charge more then others yet they may both offer to give you the same speed. So you can't always get more speed by paying more.
Like Carbon stated there are a lot of factors that determine you speeds.
Other then the ones mentioned my carbon you also have to consider the below.
Type and condition of modem.
# of computers sharing your service.
Even the weather can effect your speeds.

And even the number of people downloading from the same source.
One more question comes to mind.
Flazzard, are you talking about torrents, or just downloading from websites within the web browser?

actually I'm not using torrent, but I am using a download booster called Internet Download Manager. It was recommended by a friend. At times, with the booster, it's rate is just merely around 10kbps or even lower when the test told me that my download speed is 770kbps. I get the part about the ISP provider limiting the download rate or whatever, but i believe it's not till that low.

I've noticed the Firefox Addon DownThemAll increase download speeds, but it doesn't work half the time.
Worth a try though.
What could you possibly be downloading through the browser that takes so long, it is actually frustrating? :P

btw, it's not that the file is so huge that it's taking very long to download. The this is some files are just a few MB and the download rate which was at like below 10kbps makes it take so long when it should be done in a few seconds. If I am unlucky, I might get that rate when trying to download larger files.

Larger files are usually stored on faster servers. For example, I just downloaded Ubuntu Linux at ~1000kb/s.

I wish i can get to somewhere near there. my best so far was only about ~100kbps..

and i thought that maybe it's due to the expansion or contraction of the cables due to the temperature..lol

No its not the Speed test, its the so called "Speed Booster" software you have, those types of programs don't help with increasing your Connection speed.

yeah..i got that. but even my download speed is extremely slow. Imagine, sometimes it's less then 10kbps when the speedometer says that mine is ~770kbps..it's quite extreme right?

Sounds like something besides IE(or Firefox or whatever Browser your using) is using your connection at the same time.

well, I have a desktop and a laptop which is using the same router. but surprisingly, after midnight, the internet connection seems to be better. Has it anything to do with a lot of people using the same ISP?

That seems right, since a lot of people use the Internet at day, the server is being used more which can cause slow downs, and during the night the Server is hardly being used which frees it up.

ah..icic..then i guess the reason for my crappy internet connection must be due to that. but it sucks to have such slow connection..

So that covers one point. Bandwidth.
All the signals from everyone using the internet is filling up the width of the band of internet fibers under the ocean. 8)

but how come my connection always shows that I am connected at 100.0 Mbps even though the connection for that day is like freaking slow?(I might be a lil bit exaggerating)

Thats your connection to your router, not to the internet

Speedtest and 2 wire doesn't help you increase your speed it will just tell you what your speed is. You can try to see this 2 site if you want too :). About the weather thing, here in our place when it rains so hard my internet speed goes down.
