Is the cable set up correctly pin1 to pin 1 etc? Is there other drives in which both may be set to Master etc?

Make sure the drive is jumpered to Master...

The image is a hard drive but you get the idea.
Is this a flat ribbon cable ? ?
If so buy a new one...they do go bad.

kutless, While i am in the process of becoming newly acquainted with SATA (due to a recent acquisition). Apparently there can be only one SATA device per Data cable. So not knowing if the SATA cable provided in your computer has more than one connection point, apparently only one should be installed(device) per cable to the motherboard. Because my computer did not include SATA cables (power or data) and i have yet to purchase them i was concerned that your cable might have more than one connection available. truenorth

Then it is NOT a SATA. It is an IDE drive. The guidance given earlier from Patio and others re the pin settings (Master, slave, cable select)  and positioning of the IDE ribbon cable (the one you have identified now as your type) vis-a-VIS the positioning of the #1 pin now become relevant to your problem (again).truenorth

kutless, No problem. I you never made a mistake you would be the 1st person to do so.However now that we know the type of device and the connections it requires i would urge you to verify the placement of your IDE cable and check the location of the jumper pins. Then report back and tell us what has happened.truenorth

The ribbon cable has a key on top of it to prevent this...take your time next time around.
