Title: unable to access certian websites on any browsers?
Post by: WILFORD on August 26, 2007, 10:38:21 AM
Hi. I've been having a problem for a while in which I cannot access certian websites on my pc that I can access on other pcs with no problems. I've tried using other browsers, but still have the same problem.

I think there's something blocking certain site on the pc, but I have no idea where to look. I wonder if it is something like the hosts file or something. I know it is not my firewall, and since I only have aim and a firewall running most of the time, I do not think they are to blame.

Can anyone suggest anything?

Thanks.

If you are on a network, the network might be blocking some of the websites that you are trying to visit.  Are these just random websites, or do they have something in common (like Facebook, Myspace, etc.).  Are these potentially harmful websites that your firewall or other security programs might block?

I know it has to be something on this machine since I can access the websites from any other pc in my house, all on the same network.

And no, they are not malicious in any way. Some of them are ones like smashbros.com, the official nintendo site, or vanguard.com, the investment site.

For the smashbros site, I can see the page, but no pictures load and it goes incredibly slow, and for vanguard, certian pages refuse to load.

I honestly cannot figure out what is causing it. I might as well wipe the harddrive and hope that fixes it..

I wouldn't wipe the whole hard drive just yet!  Wait for other some other members to give their input before you do anything too drastic.

There's some very important info missing in this puzzle...
What browser ? ?
What firewall are you running ? ?
What protection programs do you currently have ? ?
Why do you suspect the hosts file ? ?
How many users are there on this machine ? ?
Does this happen when you are logged on as an Admin ? ?

Browser does not matter, since I use 3 of them and none of them work (ie, ff, opera)
Firewall does not matter, since I use the same firewall on all the 3 pcs in the house and turning it off does not change anything (sygate)
I have no protection programs running in the background or anything
I'm the only one who uses this pc
I figured it might be the hosts file since that can block certian IPs or something, I'm not sure.

I have no idea what it is, and I'm just about ready to forget about it and simply format the pc. by process of elemination, I know it has to be something wrong with THIS pc, not the network and not the other computers in the house.

I won't be suprized if I can't figure it out... I've never seen anything like this before. But, if someone can think of something to clue me into what might be going on, that would be nice.

This rules out your hosts file as the problem in fact I believe it rules out your computer as the problem.

It has to be something between your computer and your network.
I have no experience with home networks but I guess your computer has a network card and a cable that runs to a router or something.
Check the card, check each end of the cable connections, try another port in the router, move your computer to the location of a working computer.

I doubt reformatting will solve this, soldier on. :)

Edit: It will do no harm to try the following but I have my doubts it will help, go ahead and do it anyway so we don't have to ask about it later.

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. Security tab
6. Reset all 4 security zones to Default

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. Privacy
6. Restore 1 Default button

1. Start

3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. Advanced
6. Restore 1 Default button

You may need to do the following as well

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. General tab
6. Remove cookies, temporary files and history

Kudos to Raptor.

I'm on a wireless connection, if that helps.

I tried all the settings defaults you suggested, but it did not change. Thanks for trying, though.

arg, how aggravating this whole thing is...

Should I get into some really deep stuff, like traceip or ping or something like that? Maybe I need a program that detects blocking software or files or something??

OK how about the signal between your computer & the router?

it's just a basic wireless G card to a G router. I share the router with my small server pc and my mom's wireless pc. I know I can access the sites on my mom's wireless pc, so I think that kind of rules that out.

I don't have the greatest connection between the router and this computer, but I doubt that would affect some individual websites.

Think about it...

...I have thought about it, and I know my router is not setup to block websites. The only thing I meant was that it will loose the signal every so often. that's it. has nothing to do with the websites themselves

Sorry you feel like that Wilford but there's no need to swear.
I was going to suggest you relocate the computer to get a better signal as a test.
If you had a bit more patience I can 'almost' guarantee someone here would have solved the problem for you or at least given you enough inspiration to solve it yourself as often happens.

I have a very similar problem but it appears to be only one website I can not access.

I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure this one out and have hit a brick wall.

I have plugged another PC into the same position and it works no problem so it would appear to certainly be a problem within this computer.

I have tried all of the above with no success.

Please help!

Like the other two people, I also cannot access certain sites on my browser, for example, I canno access Youtube or Gamfaqs. However, I have noticed one difference, whenever I attempt to access these sites I am brought to http://www.miaminews365.net/look.php?aff=8131&subaff=1312&qq=games. I think this may be one step to solving this problem, but my progress has been completely stonewalled due to my lack of in-depth computer knowledge and my timidity with deleting files when I'm not sure exactly what they do...                    Please Help

Kharhaz what are your internet explorer settings?
Security tab
Privacy and all?
have you tried using different browsers to open the same sites?
have you reformatted your PC recently? if yes that could be a reason too .

Karhaz first off Welcome to CH...
It's best to start a new topic even though you may have similar issues as this will ensure it recieves the proper attention...
I'd suggest running all your protection programs after updating them and then DLoad and run Hijack This and save the log to a text file and post it along with what security programs you did run in our Virus and Spyware section...
It may take more than one post to get the whole logfile posted...

DO NOT let Hijack This fix anything until you have heard back from one of our Resident Experts...

Once Again Welcome Aboard !
