Title: how do I disable Windows Live Mail in Win7
Post by: khill75462 on January 09, 2011, 03:33:03 PM
Got new laptop for Xmas.  Set up WLM with my Yahoo log-in information.  I want to disable WLM so that I can use the "send  link by email" or "send page by email" with my Yahoo account.  Do not like WLM!  For some reason it refuses to recognize my PW from Yahoo, so am unable to send, receive, etc. from that program.  So, for that reason, if it's going to require my PW, to disable it, it's going to be a problem!

Prior to Win7 had XP, so very unfamiliar with Win7 and need "instructions that any 5 year old could follow".  Thanks.  Yall have always come through for me!

If you don't like and don't use, uninstall it. Same as you would in XP.

ok, I uninstalled the mail portion of Windows Live.  But I still can't get the "send page by email" or "send link by email" to highlight so that I can use it with Yahoo.  Basically, I have no way to send a page or link to anyone.  What now, please?

Not sure

You can always copy and paste the address on to your mail.

I'd really rather not have to do that since just clicking on "send page/link by emai " is so much easier.  I rebooted after I uninstalled the Windows Live Mail, but that didn't help either.  If I need to go outside of Computerhope for help, would I contact Dell help, Windows help or IE help?  I really don't understand much about a computer.  I know that comes as a surprise, but what can I tell you?  Thanks!  k

So when you right click on the page to 'send link' what happens?

On the bar where it says "page" , "safety" and 'tools", whatever that's called?  When I click on "page", the options are there to cut, copy, etc. as well as "save as", "send page by email" and "send link by email".  But the option to send page or link is shaded (grey) and so when I click (right or left) nothing happens.  Same thing for cut, copy, paste and edit.  Unable to use any of those commands.

Which browser you using?

Have you tried another browser?

Do you have a pop account? I've never used web-based email (ie, yahoo, gmail) so I don't know if they are compatible with "send mail". You may need a default email client with a pop account. I imagine someone else can confirm one way or the other. I'm about to log off for the night so I'll check back in the morning.

EDIT - just saw the above post - don't worry about what browser you are using.

I'm using IE8, I assume.  Think that's what comes with Win7.  No, have not tried another browser.  This just aggravates me so.  I was afraid to change from XP to Win7 for this very reason.  I don't have much patience (I'm nearly 70, so not likely to become patient anytime soon).  I really appreciate your trying to help me.

Pop account?  Not sure what it is.  Seems like when my son set up the Windows Live account he showed my Yahoo account as "pop"  Is pop like OE or Outlook?

On my old computer, I had Yahoo as my default mail and had no problems with sending page/link by email.  When I clicked on either of those, it would automatically take me to my Yahoo account and show the page or link in the subject line.

don't worry about what browser you are using.

My IE8 tells me i have 'no profiles created' yet Firefox opens the correct links to my gmail and outlook.

Try another browser!!

Just found this

Go to Tools>Internet Options>Programs (tab)>Internet Programs>Set Programs>Set Program Access and computer Defaults>Custom>Choose a default email program> and select your email program there. Make sure "Enable access to this program" is checked.

I;m pretty sure I've done that before.  Problem is, Yahoo isn't on the list.  Windows Live Mail used to be, but think when  I uninstalled it, that it no longer shows up either.  Let me go check for sure. thanx

ok, the only choice I have there is to "use my current email program".  It won't let me uncheck it or give me any other choices.

There is nothing wrong with the current email default program shown under Internet options, Programs whether yahoomail is shown or not. I have Microsoft Office Outlook as default but not getting any issues with my yahoo account on sending webpage or links. You mention you have made an account already previously. Could you try opening your account on a different computer to confirm the problem. Have you followed the link  with sending links/webpages?

thilnk I need to backtrack a little.  Before I uninstalled the Windows Live Mail (WLM), I was able to click on those "send page/link by email" and they would go to the WLM account.  But, when i would then try to send those pages or links from WLM, the popup would show my Yahoo log-in and ask for my PW.  The PW that I use every single day, and have for a year with Yahoo was rejected by WLM...have no idea why.  So, I ended up with lots of links and pages in my WLM account that I can't send or delete or anything because the PW won't work.  So, I figured if I just got rid of the WLM account that I could go back to  using my plain ole everyday Yahoo like I always have, i.e, being able to send pages/links by email.  BUT, ALAS AND ALACK, they're shaded grey and I can't use them now.  Also, the "instructions that any 5 yr. old could understand" is getting stretched!  Not that I don't appreciate what everyone is attempting to do, but you really need to "keep it simple".

WLM and Yahoo are to different email clients. Of course your Yahoo password will not work for WLM, why should it??

You need your WLM password to log into WLM.

OR Remove Yahoo on your Control panel and download and reinstall it again.

I know that WLM and Yahoo are totally different accounts.  But when you set up the WLM account, it asks for the email program you want to use with it.  So, when I sent a link/page by email, it would go to WLM, then when I try to send it, the Yahoo pop-up screen comes up (with my Yahoo user id already filled in), and asks for my PW.  And my PW doesn't work.  I pretty much use the same PW for everything, so even if it were asking for my WLM PW, it would be the same.  But it's not...it's asking for Yahoo.

And no, I don't have another computer I could use.

You've linked WLM with Yahoo, then uninstalled WLM.

I think there is your problem.

Install WLM again then change your defualt email to yahoo!

ok, reddevil, it's downloading.  once it's done, then what do I do?  Oh, I only wanted the mail option of Windows Live essentials (that was the only part I uninstalled), but I think it's downloading the whole shabang.  It's 38% done, so guess it'll be awhile.  I can't believe I'd even think about complaining about speed.  Until I got the new laptop, I was using dial-up!  We're out in the country and don't have cable and all the other options were too expensive.  This Verizon is a lot better than what I had, but still not the speed you get in "the City".

Just try your IE8 'send link' and see if it works.

I was the same a few years ago, I bought a new computer and started  'exploring' the old one, then my new one had a 'hiccup' and i had to use my old one again............boy it was slow.

well, I got it reinstalled, but it automatically reinstalled the Yahoo account that I'd had before.  so, I did find a place to delete that account ~ it's gone.  But I still can't use the send page/link, either from the file button or the page button.  I'll keep monkeying around with it until someone comes up with a solution.  thanks everyone.

Yes, WLM is reinstalled and the Yahoo account that was originally associated with it is deleted.

I think there is your problem.

Install WLM again then change your defualt email to yahoo!
I believe you're leading him down the wrong path.  We need to get some facts straight here.  The free Yahoo! Mail account is not a POP-enabled account; it is not designed to work with POP email clients.  The paid Yahoo! Mail account, on the other hand, is designed to work with POP email clients.

By email client, I mean any software designed mainly for email, such as Outlook Express (came with Internet Explorer up through version, so was on all Win XP and previous versions of Windows), Windows Mail (comes with Windows Vista), Microsoft Outlook (usually bundled with Microsoft Office), and some non-Microsoft programs such as Thunderbird, from Mozilla.

Now, some uses of the free Yahoo! Mail account were able to get it working with Outlook Express by using a third-party add-on called YPOPS! but I don't recommend delving into that; it's not, in my view, a very reliable option and it's too complicated to setup for less technically oriented users.  Besides, I believe the YPOPS add-on will not, or is very unlikely to, work with WLM.

To reiterate, the free Yahoo! Mail account does not, as designed by Yahoo!, work with any POP email client.  So, when khill75462 says it was using his Yahoo! Mail account with Outlook Express, we need to know how that was setup since, again, the free Yahoo! Mail account does not, as designed by Yahoo!, work with any POP email client.

khill75462, if you want an email account that really works with WLM, then create a gmail account or use an account provided by your ISP (Internet Service Provide).  Your ISP most likely provides POP-capable email accounts to all customers.

By the way, setting up a POP email account is WLM is easier than it was with Outlook Express.  For example, if you create a POP-capable account by initially creating a username and password via a visit to a website, you can open WLM, enter your username and password, and WLM will search for other data it needs and complete the setup for you.

well, I do have a Gmail account and now have it set up with WLM.  But, I still wish that the "send link/page by email" would let me use it with my Yahoo (primary account).  That's the one I keep my calendar, all contacts, etc. in.  The way it is now, if I want to send a link or page, it automatically takes me to WLM, then sends through Gmail.  If I don't have my contact list right in front of me with email addresses, etc., and don't know the email by heart, that's a problem since it doesn't auto-complete after a few letters.

But, I feel I've taken enough of everyone's time with this...and not sure that there is a way to do what I'm trying to do.  Maybe when IE9 is out of Beta I can switch and it will restore that function.  Thanks all!

That's not going to happen.  Again, IE is a web browser, not an email client.  When you click on an email link, Windows naturally looks for an email client, i.e. WLM in this case, not a web browser.

I suggest this: How to Import Your Yahoo! Mail Messages and Contacts Into Gmail (http://email.about.com/od/gmailtips/qt/Import_Your_Yahoo_Mail_Messages_and_Contacts_Into_Gmail.htm), and make a full transition to gmail if you want to solve the Yahoo! Mail problem.

I really do appreciate all the time & effort.  I don't know whether I'm not explaining myself well or not (probably).  I have no problem using my Yahoo mail account.  The problem I have is not being able to use the "send link/send page" function.  I cannot use this with any mail program ~Yahoo, Gmail, WLM.  It's greyed out and will not hilite when I click on it.  I don't know for sure what caused it to quit working, but suspect it had something to do with trying to set up the WLM account.  Sorry to be so much trouble.

I reallize now that I said earlier that the link I'm trying to use went to WLM. then to Gmail.  Well,  I was wrong.  Trying to click on the "send page by email" or "send link by emai" does absolutely nothing because it won't hilite.
