Title: windows\system32\config\system corrupt, no boot
Post by: jrkelly on October 14, 2008, 12:18:56 PM
My laptop will not boot up and message indicates config\system32\CONFIG\SYSTEM file problem.  The dark screen indicates repair file by starting windows setup using original CD-Rom and select r at first screen.  When I insert the original Toshiba disc which contains XP, and select r, it leads me into a complete hard disc erase, which of course will destroy a lot of valuable files.  What do I do?  Thanks for any help.  --jrkelly

The error message indicates that your registry is corrupt.   To preserve data you could install the hdd in another pc and copy files.

MS KB307545 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545) applies but data loss is almost certain.

Good luck

Do not select "r".
