with xp if you wanted to move doc's or photo's you could click send to and move them to another location , but send to is not in win7 so do you have to open 2 windows and drag from 1 location to the other
-
I have "send to" on my copy on win7. When you right click on a file, do you not see "send to"?
-
What do you when you type %UserProfile%\Appdata\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Sendto into the address bar in weindos explorer?

yes , ( i must learn to right click with win7) ok it worked with documents but not with photos you cannot send from one file to another
-

I'm not sure I know what you're trying to do here. Send a file to another file? Why? What does that mean?
I can see the "Send To" option when I right click any file.
-

Do you mean send a photo (or file) from one folder to another?
-
ok , i'm transferring and sorting photos and i want to send some of them from file "a" to file "B"
in xp in the side bar you got a choice of copy or send if you hit send you got a choice of where to send it , its not in win7
am i going 2 have to open 2 windows minimise and drag from one file to another

That does not make sense. Do you not know the difference between a file and a folder. File A remains file A regardless of what folder you put it in. Moving file A does not make it file B. Only renaming it would do that, and that's clearly not what you're talking about. Here's a reference that might help you understand the difference between a file and a folder: http://www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia_term/0,2542,t=files+vs+folders&i=60967,00.asp

That's how I'd do it.
Open one folder and press the windows key + the left arrow key. Open the other one and press the windows key + the right arrow button. They will be perfectly aligned, side by side. :)

jj 3000 thats the only way i can see to do it , it was very easy with XP
-

I see no difference between Win XP and Win 7 in this regard. With both, I need to right click to get the context menu and, with both, I have the same options, none of which is sending to a folder other than My Documents or a compressed folder. If you see the option to select a folder to Send to, this is probably because your right-click context menu has been modified from the default settings.

Again, I see no difference. I would open two Explorer windows, as JJ 3000 suggested.
-
ok i will do it jj3000's way , but as in reply 6 , if you clicked on a folder the side bar showed , move , copy and a couple of others it brought up a popup and you could choose a folder to send to
-

Every user has a Send To folder into which may be placed shortcuts, scripts etc. These appear in the Send To menu when an item is right clicked.
-
ok soybean , thanks for your and jj3000 help

This reference lists the default Send to commands: http://www.theeldergeek.com/send_to_menu_command.htm. Where is the option you're talking about?

In W7 it's usually C:\Users\<User name>\SendTo
One of the things you can add to the Send To folder is a short cut to... the Send To folder. Also one to the user's Start Menu Startup folder.

It is described on that page which you linked to.

OK, that confirms a point I mentioned in a previous post:

Obviously, harry has not modified, i.e. added, that option to his right-click context menu.

I don't know why you're making such a meal out of this. Did you think I was contradicting you in some way?

Perhaps some misinterpretation on my part. Sorry.
Now, I'd like to see some additional feedback from harry. He has not acknowledged that he ever modified his right-click context menu, yet he claims he had an option in Win XP that he does see in Win 7, that option being that he could send directly to any folder, or at least the My Pictures folder.
Personally, I'd do as JJ 3000 suggested and open two Explorer Windows.

(Windows 7)
Example standard Send To menu (right click an item)
Example expanded Send To menu (hold down Shift and right click an item)
The Send To menu normally displays a limited selection of items, including the Desktop and your Documents library, as well as any removable storage devices and mapped network drives. You can access an expanded Send To menu that includes all folders in your user profile by holding down the Shift key and when you choose the Send To option from the right-click shortcut menu.

Excellent! Thanks for that tip on Windows 7.

I don't see any question marks in your post so I'm not sure whether you have a question. ::) How about some punctuation in your posts?

Also could i be right in saying there is a lot of things in it left over from XP in my old drive or could xp still be there as its a new build?.

If the right-click context menu in Win XP gave you an option to select any folder to send to, then yes, your system was modified in order for that to happen. So, sometime in the past, that menu was modified, perhaps without you knowing about the change at that time.
i still have the old driver drive installed with a lot of stuff in it . Do you think i should move everything one at a time and try to find it or would i be wasting my time ?.
I presume you're still referring to moving photos and other personal files. So, there's no need to move any other files, such as Windows system files. And, to move files one at a time would be a big waste of time. Just select a group of files all at once and copy/paste them as a group. If you have a folder open, you can click anywhere in that folder (in the Windows Explorer window) and hit Ctrl/a to select all files in the folder.
Also could i be right in saying there is a lot of things in it left over from XP in my old drive or could xp still be there as its a new build?.
If you have not reformatted your old hard drive, then all files, including "things in it left over from XP", would still be there.
-
thank you soybean , i will have a good look in the old drive to-morrow and see what i can find
i believe the new parts went into the new tower and it was all set up and then the old drive was installed , but then i know i could be wrong
-
ok soybean i have been through the old drive and found nothing to help me , so i'm just going to open 2 windows and drag and then sort them from there , it must have been an add on or something i downloaded , but thanks for all your help , harry
-
