My Cd burner quit working so I took it out and replaced it with a new one. When I restarted the computer I can't find the cd drive now. I have the cd for the new cd burner but I can't use it. I opened My Computer and don't see the drive. I can't find it anywhere. What do I need to do? Thanks!

Try these steps:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
2. http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

When I go to the Device manager the closest thing I see is "Primary IDE controller (dual fifo). I am still using Windows 98 if that helps. Thanks.
-
Primary IDE controller
That should do. Do you also have Secondary controller?
Did you try two first possible solutions?
-
I haven't tried the first two steps as I am unable to access the internet with that computer. I am using my laptop right now. Once I get past this problem I will be able to fix the problem with the internet.
Concerning the 3rd step you described, the item is listed like this:
Primary IDE controller (dual fifo).
------Disk Drive
------Generic IDE Disk Type 47
When I checked the settings one is assigned a letter drive of C and the other D.
I just wanted to check before I uninstalled these.
Am I still on the right track?
Thanks!
-
Uninstall just Primary IDE controller.
BTW, maybe, you should fix your Internet connection, first.
-
Ok, it says that this device is part of a multi-function device and cannot be removed independently. The parent device is Intel 82801AA Bus Master IDE Controller.
-
I have to stop here, then, because I don't remember how those things are set up in Windows 98. I don't want to give you bad advice.
You still can try my two other advices. You can access those links from your laptop.

Thanks for the help. I did a little more checking and I am getting this message, " There is no CD-ROM player attached to this computer".
Thanks again.

Is the drive detected by the BIOS? If not, the drive is either not connected properly or faulty.
Ok, first, double check your connections. You should have an IDE cable and power cable attached to the back of the drive. If both cables are not connected, the computer will never see the drive.
Is the drive on the same IDE cable as the hard drive or is it on a seperate one? If it's on the same one, make sure the jumper on the back is set to slave.

I went back in and checked. When I exchanged the old cd burner with the new, I put the connections on the new as I found them on the old. I have the Power Connection, the IDE ribbon and the connection to the Analog Audio. This is exactly how my old one was hooked up. I don't understand what I need to do with the Jumpers.
Thanks!

Is the drive on a separate cable from the hard drive or on the same cable? And is the BIOS even seeing the drive?
Look at the back of the drive in the picture. See the area marked "jumper"? There should be a little plastic connect on a set of the pins. You may need to move this. (Note: The jumper pins might be between the power and IDE connect on some drives.) If the pins are not labeled as to what they are, look at the label on the drive, it should tell you what each pin set is.
If it is on the same cable as the hard drive, then you need to move the jumper on the back to SLAVE (sometimes labeled SL or SLA).
If it is on its own cable and connected to the MIDDLE connector on the cable, set it to MASTER (sometimes labeled MA or MAS).
If it is on its own cable and connected to the END connector, set it to SLAVE.

I have no cables going to the new cd rom other than the Power connection, IDE connection and the Analog Audio. There is a plastic clip located on the center two pins of the area you are talking about. One set of pins is marked CS (cable select), the middle set is marked SL (Slave) and the other is marked MA (master). Like I said, there no cable to it only a clip on the ones marked SL. I cannot see any loose cables. Maybe I don't understand what I am looking for?
Thanks again!
-
The IDE cable is what I'm talking about.

Is the CD drive sharing this cable with the hard drive?
And does the BIOS see the drive?
-
The IDE Connector is connected straight to the motherboard only. How do I check the Bios? I really appreciate your patience!
thanks!
-
Change the jumper to MASTER and see if it works then.
Getting to the BIOS varies, depending on manufacturer. Usually F2 or DEL. Usually says as soon as you turn it on.
-
I have the jumper on the two pins under the Master. It still isn't working. When I go to My Computer I don't even see an E: drive or cd rom.
-
Sounds like the jumper isn't correct...re-check the diagram
-
I just tried switching the jumper to all three positions and nothing happened. Could it be that somehow when I made the switch from the old cd burner to the new that I lost the drivers to the E: drive? Is there a way to check this? Remember I'm just a novice at best and just throwing it out there!
Thanks!
-
Is the drive even being detected by the BIOS? ???
-
What am I looking for in Bios? I was in MS-DOS and it gave me a list of things.
Thanks.
-
In the BIOS, look under IDE configuration.
-
I didn't see it listed. What now?
-
Probably one of these 4 things:
1. The jumper isn't in the right place
2. The drive doesn't have power
3. The drive isn't connected to the IDE cable correctly
4. The drive is faulty (not likely, but not impossible)
-
Test the drive in another machine to see if it is working...
-
So you don't think it could be a lost driver or something? When I first installed the cd player and restarted the computer I got a message that the computer detected a new system or something like that and asked if I wanted to search for a new driver. I think I messed up there?
