The original post is confusing...list what HDD's you are speaking of , how they are cabled and jumpered and more info on the system...i.e. does it have only one IDE channel ? ?

Ok basically the there are 2 ribbon ports on the mobo , i have my main hard drive plugged the master socket and the other is on slave.......... but there linked up together not only on the mobo but on the ribbon cables them selfs , i have tried swapping them all round master to slave slave to master then i tried installing x-p on the hard drive it still didn't want to install windows x-p , so like i said before i tried doing the same thing on my old 60gb hard drive and i had no issues , but when i try to do it on the other hard drive i get the same blue screen saying its checking my hardware configuration , then it runs the installation process all over again .......

Hi Richenstony just another thought did you try installing it with just the new Hdd connected?

I cant do that because my external dvd-drive wont work and like i said before all the ports have been taken up on my mobo with my internal hard-drives my external wont work because its usb.....and usb isn't active until windows starts and i wont have the options when booting etc..

Your ide slots will support to components on each slot, do you not have a ribbon with 2 connectors on it?

Ive got like 600 ribbons lmao!! it would take ages to look through them all but i most likely do.....let me see if i get what your saying

Ok at the moment my internal dvd-drive is connected , but its not connected into the ports because there isn't one available , so are you saying link the dvds separate ribbon to one of others without connecting it , as in a cross them together.

sorry if im confusing you im a little there myself , its hard to explain how its all connected ...

I actually tried connecting a sata hard drive but it didn't work for some reason and i was also told it wasn't compatible whether thats a load of rubbish i don't know , i know it says sata on there but i was told by some computer guy that it would work well.........but he couldnt even get my hardrives working so to *censored* with him....... im also thinking about connecting 2 more sata hard drives , i want to know whether thi s will slow my system down or not it will be 2 more 160gbs.... a grand total of 520gbs.. :o ;D

Hook up both hard drives on ribbon cable IDE1...the one you want the OS installed to should be jumpered as master and connected at the end of the ribbon cable.
The other hard drive should be jumpered as slave and be on the middle ribbon cable connector.
You then have the entire IDE2 port for 2 more drives including a DVD drive.

You're making this more complicated by suggesting SATA drives into the equation....again state which drive you want to boot from whether it's SATA or IDE and we'll go from there.

i am thick  i missed the message about the sata drives,
you should be able to put sata and ide Hdd on there if that is what you wish as for slowing it down i can not answer but aslong as uyou go into the bios and state which you want to boot from it should not be a problem

ok i did try a few other things still no luck .......... the only reason i want it changed is because it takes about 10 mins to start my computer up and i dont know why but what i do know is i need to get shot of the of the 160gb harddrive but that isnt going to happen ....

Get rid of ALL drives except the hard drive you want to use as your main drive.
Hook it up as master on IDE1
Hook up the DVD as master on IDE2.
Reboot and enter setup to make sure the HDD is recognised...if it is then re-boot with the XP CD in and set to first boot device and install the OS.

Once you are done and all the drivers are installed and working you can introduce the other drives one at a time...
