Title: C drive memory changed to 1Gb memory
Post by: Sacred_Devil on June 19, 2005, 02:37:41 AM
I ran into a big problem. Last time my c drive have 66.7GB of memory, after some partitioning, it became 1GB. how do i change it back to 66.7GB?

You may need to activate the remaining storage capacity.

You can only activate the remaining storage space if you have partitioned it. Have you done so?

If yes, then here is how to activate the remaining space (Windows XP):

1. Right click on My Computer
2. Manage
3. Unfold storage
4. Disk Manager
5. Right click on the unactivated, but partitioned space and select format

You can also activate the remaining space through Fdisk or Windows XP Setup.

Create a Bootable floppy disk and type the command Fdisk

When you used fdisk did you remember to Enable Large Drive Support?

1024 Mb = 1·0Gb

10240 Mb = 10 Gb

The space on a drive is referred to as drive-space.

Memory is either RAM (Random Access Memory) or swap-file (Virtual Memory) (Paging file with Windows NT/2000/XP)

yea... when i went to "fdisk" command, it asked if i want to enable large disk support for FAT, i said no. the after that it asked if i want to allow large disk space for ntfs, i said yes.
so i went to set active partition, this is what it showed me:

partition:             1            C: 2             3
status:                                 A
type:               ExtDOS     PriDOS        NTFS
volume:
label:
Mbytes:            4761         2047         2748
system:                             FAT16
usage:               44%         19%           25%

just to make sure, it is read like this: Partition 1 has a ExtDOS, 4761 MBytes, and its usage is 44%..

open to all helps....

total disk space is 10781Mbytes

when i try to set partition 1 to active, it said partition selected not startable.

so i'm not sure what to do now...
and my c drive is still on 1.99GB...
i want to return it to 66.7GB

You should say yes to Large disk support for FAT as Windows 98 can not read NTFS.

You may need to delete and recreate partitions until you are able to assign the the total amount of disk space you have in your possession.

Windows '98 should only be set up on FAT32 so you need to answer Yes to "Do you want to Enable Large Drive Support for FAT32."

You should go back to fdisk, Enable Large Drive Support for FAT32, and delete ALL the partitions on the drive. Then make a new C: drive (Primary DOS drive) of say 2050 Mb and then an Extended DOS drive using ALL of the remaining space.

You can make three Logical drives IN the extended DOS partition.

But you say that the total drive space is 10781 Mb which is only 10.528 Gb...

Which bootdisk are you using to partition the drive with?

I would just use a standard Windows '98 bootdisk.

i was told  i can allocate how many MegaBytes into each partition... how do i do that?

By following  the instructions provided by the program. It should prompt you at a certain point wheter you wish to divide Hard Disk Drive space in megabytes or percentages of the total amount of disk space available.

you mean after i delete the partition?
because i'm very tired of doing the formatting... i have been doing it for like 3 or 4 times for the last few days.
so i want to be very sure

bump!

i delete my partition all that, formatted it....

and i could not find the part where it prompt me to divide the space...

and it is still stuck with 1.99GB

Does your BIOS detect your Hard Disk Drive as 67.7GB?

You may need to make use of the following simulator to gain experience in using Fdisk.

Information about the fdisk command. (http://www.computerhope.com/fdiskhlp.htm)

i read the "fdisk" thing/document... then i follow its instruction. so it was how it went out:

Com: "Do you want to enable large disk for FAT32..."
Me: Yes(Y)

(side note:  --> means proceed to)

so i chose number (3) which is : delete partition or logical DOS Drive--> delete Logical DOS Drive(s) in the extended DOS Partition

After that it showed this message: No logical drives defined. All logical drives deleted in extended DOS Partition.

then i proceed to delete extended DOS Partition(number 2) . But it showed me this message: cannot delete extended DOS partition while logical drives exist.

so i tried every step.. rebooting times after times after different procedure.

then i went to choice 4: display partition information.
it showed me this:

The extended DOS Partition  contains Logical DOS Drives. Do you want to display the Logical drive information? i entered 'Yes"
it showed "No logical drives defined"

then in order for me to type all this thing using my computer, i install my OS Windows 98 ...  then around the beginning, it showed me this:

Caution SU0012
Setup detected an OS/2 or Window NT file system partition on your hard disk. Files on this partition will not be available when you use Windows 98. For more information, see setup.txt on setup disk 1 or Win98 Compact Disc

You have many more choices. If you wish to completely remove all partitions made, I suggest you choose Delete Primary DOS partition.

If that does not work immediatly, use the other options.

i can only delete the Logical DOS Drive(s) in the extended DOS Partition .... no other choices...

and also my partition percentage doesnt add up to 100%... because the "fdisk simulation" add up to  100% but mine only add up to 63%

The remaining 37% should become available when you remove all partitions previously created.

remove is the same as delete right?
but i can only delete Logical DOS Drive(s) in the extended DOS Partition .. after that i try to delete other partition... but it said cannot delete extended DOS partition while logical drives exist... if this one cannot be deleted, primary drive also can'tbe deleted...

What if you try to do so whilst having the HDD mounted as a slave in another computer?

i only have one computer.
maybe you can tell me what information you need for my computer and i put it up here.

Lets summarize.

Your HDD is 67.7GB.
It is detected by Fdisk and Windows as 10.7GB.
You have reformatted all partitions
One partition refuses to be removed
You wish to install Windows 98

Is this correct?

1. Does your BIOS detect its full size? If no, you will have to configure the HDD manually by using the instructions printed on top of the HDD.

I. Should you wish to install Windows 98, you will have to use the FAT 32 file system. This means that a partition can only be 32GB large if I remember correctly.
