Title: how to set up a remote desktop connection?
Post by: Jonas Wauters on August 07, 2007, 12:58:19 PM
Well I have a workgroup. 3 Win xp sp2 and 1 win vista home premium.
I want to create a remote desktop connection to all computers and they must be able to connect to my PC to.
I have Win XP SP2.
Thanks in advance

Jonas ;)

BTW: I don't have a reason why I do this I just want to learn how.
(Google doesn't offer much help)

Well in XP all you need to do is go to System Properties. (right click my computer and select properties.)
Then select Remote and check "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer." Then you can connect to the computer using either the computer name (if on the same network) or the IP. The easiest way to login is with a user that is already created on the computer.
I can't remember the procedure for Vista and my laptop (with vista on it) isn't around right now. But it should be similar to XP.

I tried that but it didn't work.
Oh well I thought that was the way but now I found out that there is something wrong with my computer.
I am in the same workgroup with the same networkID.
But I can't see any computers of the network.
It has worked for moths.
It could be a hardware problem,x I guess.(Again)
Thanks for helping me.

It could also be a firewall blocking you from seeing others on the network... either on your end or theirs.

If you have a fire wall, see if there is any settings allowing or disallowing file and printer sharing. If you have a fire wall let me know what program you are using.

That's right. It could be your windows firewall or any other firewall. Normally windows firewall doesn't allow remote desktop connection. To enable it, got to control panel > Windows Firewall > the Right Most Tab > Settings for your local network , then tick the box labelled "remote desktop".

That might help.

I set up the network in the first place so I know what can be blocking it.
I have set up the firewall properly.
(Allow network detection and allow printer and file sharing.)
It has worked moths.
It just stopped working. Why ???
I can't see think of any software witch is blocking it.

Actually I checked every setting and I found a strange one called "Video- watching video's on Internet".
I didn't know a firewall could block it so I unchecked it.
Strangely enough that solved the problem.
How can this be that a Video allow setting blocks a network detection?

Well it's the firewall of Windows Live OneCare.
And (Don't ask me Why) I think OneCare is a good program.
Oh: I can still look at online videos.

Well after struggling with the firewall I was able to get to the welcome screen of the remote computer.
But when I enter the PW and hit enter.
I got the error message: can't connect due to an account limitation.
What can it be?
I enable remote control.
Its just not my lucky day I guess.

Its not the actual admin but it is a computer admin account.

Is it a XP or Vista machine you're trying to log in to?

I have problems with rdp on a very random basis. You're best bet is to get a third party remote control program.
Currently, at work, we are using Remote Control Pro by Alchemy-Lab. But I'm trying to get the manager to buy CrossTec Remote Control because it has almost zero limitations. But, you probably don't have the extra $400 to spend on it for 3 computers. (We're buying 50 licenses for $3700!)
Look on sourceforge.net for remote control programs. They've got a few good ones and they will probably work better than microsoft stuff. Search for vnc.

A XP home SP2.
With use of the remote desktop connection program.
I don't know how I got that program.(Doesn't matter I love it.)But I would like to be able to use it.
The XP home doesn't have that program and is also up-to-date.

Hmm  don't know why can't login...
Try entering the computer name before the username like this.
\computername\username

Btw. the remote desktop program is installed by default in XP Pro. But you can install it on a XP Home machine.

Well I can't type \\computername\username
as he only askes for the computername.

And should the program be installed on both computers in order to work?
As we only got a recovery CD.

Are your two computers connected to the same network?

No you shouldn't need to install anything on the computer you're connecting to.

You are unable to log on because of an account restriction.

Cause:  You cannot connect because the account you are using for the connection requires a password.

Solution:  Set a password for that user account.
I found the above, as I understand it the account you try to login as must have a password.

Oh I forgot to say the Vista comp has only 1 PW protected (admin privileged) account.
Its always an admin privileged account if you only have 1 account but I thought it would be better to mention it. (As this is getting to be a tortural.)

Hmm not entirely sure what the problem is then.
What error does it give you?
Also try this update on your xp machine.
