I am having a constant repetative occurance of my
computer dumping to a full reboot. It happens after
running for a few minutes while working at cut and paste and or "save as opperations" or most "right click" context opperations. It never happens when I boot the machine and let it just run all day. It is a HP Pavilion a430n running Win XP Home. I have done all the Virus and Spyware checks. I have also used the msconfig to remove all but the minimum startup files. I now have a copy of an error message that resulted when the computer self reboots. Also, as I clicked on a "save as" dialog box just before the reboots, the entire taskbar was jumping around! Here is the error message.

have you tried a system restore these problems m$oft now about and the fix is included in the service packs..

Restore made no change. You said MS knows about my type of problem and has fixed it in a service pack. This system states WinXP Ver 2002 Service pack 1. What service pack has the fix?

There is supposed to be a hotfix that follows sp1 does this also happen with the keyboard and did this happen before the sp1 was installed and have you added more hardware to your system can you look in the events log which is located in start/control panel/admin tools error log it might tell you if its a driver that causing this the codeSTOP:0x0000008E relates to a hardware problem like graphics card maybe..more info if possible..

Hello Merlin. The system came with the service pack already installed. I have not added anything (Hardware) to the computer other than a second hard drive to back up to. The problems started before the additional drive though. The computer has the HP auto update on it, so
it is possible that HP may have updated a driver for the nVidia video board. I don't know how to find out if they did so! I will try to use the keyboard to cut and past to
see if it causes the same error. From the admin tools menu, there is no immediate error log on my system but there is an event viewer selection that has 3 selections, one of which is System. It is the only one that has an active log. The log is huge! It has 2,425 Events! Thruout
the log there are a number of instantces where there are groups of three redcircled X's and each one is given an event number of 7000. When I double click on the first of these I am given the following;

question how old is your pc ?if its new call the boys to fix it..the nvida graphics card is the culprit. and needs to be removed by opening the case?or.either remove it from the device manger to do this right-click my computer /properties /device manager/harware/scroll down to adapters and remove it on re-boot windows will find it there it could be irq problem thats causing it. and while your there is look for any yellow icons if there is it should throw up an error code or update the driver a corupted driver may be that problem also if you can type dxdiag in the run box this will also help you? suggestions and tests you can try hth

Hello Merlin. From your last reply, I ran the DirectX
tests and have some of the results for you. So far
the only thing I see is that the Video driver date

The computer is not very old but I was not able to
use it right away as I had to leave the area for over
a month. The HP Support techs now tell me that I
have to wipe the drive and reinstall the windows!
There are no errors showing at this time in the
device manager. When I find the latest driver for
this Video board, I will follow your sugestion to
remove it (the display adapter) from the Device
Manager and reinstall it with that driver. At the end
of your reply, I see, "suggestions and tests you can
try hth" and the sentence ends there. Let me know if
you have any other thoughts. dbj15

This sounds very similar to a situation I once had regarding Nvidia drivers. I failed to fully disable any of my anti-virus, firewall and internet security software. When this did happen to me I simply had to fully remove all current video drivers through add/remove programs turn off all anti-virus softwares and reinstall the most current video drivers. It was so bad for me once that I seriously had to wait for a couple of weeks for Nvidia to have yet a newer version to work out the last of the bugs. I dont know if this will help.
