Title: What is after...
Post by: DAL818 on August 20, 2011, 12:26:53 PM
I know laptop will soon have a terabyte available on the HD, my question is what comes next sizewise, after the yottabyte?

It is going to be a long time before a unit after the yottabyte is needed.  In the case of hard drives, they still need to get past petabyte, exabyte, and zettabyte before they even reach the yotabtye.

If I had to guess, though, I would say that it would be based on the Greek word for nine.

Here is a list of all the SI prefixes.  [Link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SI_prefix#List_of_SI_prefixes)]

A guy in California is campaigning for hella* for the 10^27 prefix. He says the analysis of many physical phenomena reveals natural quantities in excess of 27 orders of magnitude., e.g the amount of energy released by the Sun would be more elegantly expressed as 0.3 hellawatts than as 300 yottawatts. The guy who heads the Consultative Committee for Units (CCU), the body which advises the international committee, says "The prefixes [zetta & yotta) we introduced 20 years ago are still not widely used. There is no point making changes that nobody pays any attention to and would only make things more complicated." He suggests relaxing the rule forbidding compound prefixes thus allowing kiloyotta etc.

Even if the need for a new prefix was accepted, there is little chance it would take the name hella, he added. Most existing SI prefixes are derived from Latin or Greek words for numbers, a trend that the committee is keen to continue.

The last thing we need is a prefix inspired by a South Park episode.

I put in an asterisk after hella but never included the footnote it was intended to point to. Here it is:

*The UK "Daily Telegraph" primly informed its readers that "Hella is North Californian slang for "very" or "a lot of". Mr Sendek and his supporters argue that its adoption would be a fitting honour for the state's impressive record of scientific research."
