Because my laptop has limited memory I changed the default download folder to a microSDXC card.
However there are a few issues and questions arising from doing this:
- • some things still want to download and/or set up on C:/ drive
• I am getting duplicate downloads in my new default drive as well as the original - will deleting the 'Program Files' and 'Program Files (86)' on C:/ drive solve this issue and is it safe to delete these?
• sometimes an exe file won't start because it can't find file location
• Windows 10 updates have trouble installing
• Programs downloaded and installed on D:/ drive can't pin to Task Bar - is there a fix for this
• New Apps default drive is still C:/ and doesn't show option to change - how can I change this?

How did you move the location of the directory?
I can guess what you did. Who told you to do it that way?
Some programs will still look in the old place.
Did you know you can assign a drive to a directory?

Look for where it says:
Change Drive Letter and Paths ...
Used correctly, it lets you expand your storage as if the first drive became larger. This is like the mount point feature in Linux.

I changed it using the following:
Admin Command Prompt
takeown /f "C:\Windows\System32" /r
Then changed the default folder to D:/
I didn't save the website I got that from - I usually do.
Was this not a good way to do it?

I suppose I should undo what I did above.

Moving and/or changing location of any Windows System folders will stop things from running properly and possibly render the PC un-bootable...
The reason you have a Program Files and Program Files(86) folder is likely because your Win ver. is 64 bit...these should also not be moved or renamed...
The above is why you are getting errors when launching any .exe's...
I would revert all your changes before it stopps running altogether.
Have you considered getting a larger HDD for this PC ? ?

Assuming you are talking about downloading from the web using a browser, you can always right-click on whatever it is you want to download and point it to the location of your choosing

• New Apps default drive is still C:/ and doesn't show option to change - how can I change this? This is typically hard-coded into the app's installation routine - you have to change the location during the install

D:/ is a 64GB micro SDXC card

You don't "move" the download folder. You just select a new location to which you want to download and set the option in the browser preferences to always download to that location.

Sorry for misunderstanding - when I said I 'moved' downloads folder I meant I changed it's path to a preferred download folder. :P
To revert back to 'Trusted Installer' what do I type in to command prompt?
And to answer a previous question - yes my Win ver is a 64 bit.
And to answer another previous question - no I hadn't thought of putting a bigger HDD in my laptop because I didn't think that could be done in a laptop. There is space to have another 4GB put in but that's all so I didn't think it was worth the expense for such a small amount of extra memory. As far as I can tell the micro SDXC card is the best option because it gives me an extra 64GB of memory. I just have to learn how to redirect downloads to the micro SDXC card in drive D:/
I purchased this laptop for study only and wasn't too concerned about memory because I have 1T of cloud storage for all my files. However I didn't realise just how small the memory was because it's nowhere near enough just to download all the software I need for my studies.

The 4G is RAM...not storage space...you're confusing the 2...
Post the full Model # of the laptop and we can recommend what HDD you can get for it.
This will solve the free space issues you are having...

If I am confusing the two why doesn't another storage drive show up?
And why does it keep telling me I've run out of memory?
And why didn't the salesman explain that to me when I asked him about the memory?
Instead he sold me the micro SDXC card and told me to use that.

Memory is 28.8GB
What I discovered with that command line i typed in it didn't actually change ownership of 'Trusted Installer'
It added me as owner and gave me full access and control.
