Title: XP home   issue with display of the add and r
Post by: totaleclipser on November 09, 2006, 01:01:12 PM
Having an issue with the display in the add and remove programs list. When you open it, it lists all programs from A through D then there is a large area to scroll down through that starts off all black then as you go down it stays black on the sides like a border with white inside for awhile then a black section inside the white for awhile then white inside that one and then black inside the next one so as you scroll down in the middle area it looks like equal black and white stripes then it starts to go back to normal as if you were going back in reverse then back to white with all the rest of the programs listed from E-Z

Anyone ever see this before and how do i fix it?

This, i was told, might have some bearing on the problem i am having with install of new video card. PC runs fine with TI4200 WITH 93.71 DRIVERS but system refuses to install a new 7600GS and the so called techs can't figure it out so all they say is to wipe the HD and start over, this has to be the last resort.

Any help in the right direction please

totaleclipser...  The things computers do never cease to amaze me.......
What operating system are you using, XP home or XP Pro ?
This issue never occurred prior to changing the vid card ..... is that correct?
Was the old vid card integrated or a plug in card ?

There's a registry edit that can fix this but before you go there have a look at ccleaner>tools, you may be able to remove the bad entry from there.
Ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/download/)
(During install, uncheck the Yahoo Toolbar option)

XP Home. No this has been in there for a long time. I was told by so called tech person that because they could not install the new drivers and get sys. to acknowledge the card even after using driver cleaner pro that it must be my op sys.
oldest card was leadtek GF3 TI200 / MSI TI4200/ EVGA6600GT WHICH DIED then they had no replacement at the time so went back ti4200 until 3 days ago for this new one 7600gs which is giving me fits, the mother board is an A7V333 with agp pro slot and info says it is 2.0 compliant

I was in contact with nvidia , they suggested chipset bio driver update.

Did CCleaner:  no diff
Did MEM test: no problems
Did VIA 4IN1 bios driver: no diff
Did Prim 95 stress test:  no problems
Did defrag:  ok
Did anti virus run: ok
Did spyware/adware run: ok
Did registry Fix v5.5 free ver.

       Problems  found: 296

Classes section: 58
Application Paths: 2
Program ID section 55
File associations:  2   These 2 are fixed by free ver.
Complete Registry scan:  175
Invalid shortcuts:  4

So should i then buy something like this and fix these and see if it will fix add/remove weird look and maybe the new card issue ?  Or just give it up and get an 6600gt from newegg seeing how they seem to have them back in stock now and it did work before with no issues till it died? not sure anymore arrgh!

Funny how pc works fine/same as before with TI4200, overclocked to 300/515 playing farcry  through coolbits.

Did you just run the cleaner in ccleaner or did you go into tools and check the add/remove entries in there?
See there is a difference between uninstall & remove the entry?

Oops forgot to say no Autocad on sys.
And yes i did just run the cleaner and the issues. i am not sure what you are asking me to do, but perhaps if i found something in this Tools area to just uninstall it if it was pertnate to the problem.  I have attached the list of what is in there.  Perhaps there is something you will see that i do not , that should be removed.

I suspect you have unistalled a program or programs in the past but the uninstallers were poorly written & they have left that those blanks in your Windows add/remove programs.

You will notice that ccleaner has options to either run the uninstaller or remove the entry.

Are there any entries showing in ccleaner>tools that are not showing up in Windows add/remove programs or are there any entries in ccleaner that you have already uninstalled?

Yes i did see that "Programs to uninstall" and the list is long and it does have some things on there that are not on the add/remove programs file , some appear to be sub parts of other programs like from cannon camera but there are a few i do not know what they are. So i must admit i did not run the unistaller cus wasn't sure if it would do the whole list or only the one i highlighted of which i have no certainty of the ones i can do without screwing up something.  I have in the past removed lots of stuff and i also have gone into the registry and removed what i was sure had been removed from the add/remove program files but had left entries behind and have never messed anything up.  So with that in mind how do i determine what should get removed?

Looking at your original post I think your problem would be in the Ds to Es.
That should narrow the search down a little.

Have any of the following been uninstalled but are still listed?
If so I'd use the ccleaner remove entry button or edit the entry out of the registry if you're ok with that.

To Fed:  Thank you the fix was to get rid of E A Updater and the add/remove gets displayed properly.   Now i will have to see if that was causeing a problem with new install of vidio card. One can hope it would be that easy!!

thanks again for your help.

It seems it's a common problem with program uninstallers failing to remove the actual entry.
If you Goggle for +"add remove programs" +black you will see what I mean.
How did you remove the entry, with ccleaner tools or a registry edit?

Forgot to mention i was able to install new 7600gs just fine after all that drama, sure am glad i am skeptical of what store techs say, they wanted me to wipe the HD and do a clean install of OP sys.

Thanks again   time for Farcry addon levels and mods

Have you seen the addon level with the swimming sharks? :o
The best Farcry patch is the nocd patch ;)
I'm on my second run through it, stuck in that Volcano level :-[

Do not recall if i have, got a level or mod name for it?  I have been through something similar as far as a very vilant and diligent mutants around a valcano, you have to drive over a messed up bridge before the action heats up?
I do not have a nocd patch does that mean i do not need to put cd in all the time?
Title: Re: XP home   issue with display of the add and r
Post by: Fed on November 13, 2006, 12:09:43 PM
I'll put up a list of the addon levels I've played or looked at later, it has to be one of those.

That's where I'm at, over the bridge, up the hill, jump the lava river and carry on up the next hill on foot.
Those big dudes sure are tough.

I use the nocd patch to avoid using the disk, I don't consider it piracy because I have the original.
(It's just a replacement exe file)

I remember the spot but not the level name, took me some time to get through it.
I like the idea of nocd ,saves time and wear&tear on system.
Here is my list if  it will send.

One more thing, i need to make a retraction.
Yes useing CCleaner solved the add/remove display problem
BUT
the drivers and card issue was in the registry under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Enum
PCI
need to right click and check full control in order to install properly.
