Cheers! My Acer computer is less than a year old, I am the only user, I have Windows xp and have Powerdvd . A few months ago, something happened and whenever I load a cd or dvd, a box pops up and says insert disc, either that or access denied. I checked the device manager and it says that everything is running fine. This is driving me batty, please, can someoe help me? ???
-
Do ALL discs have the problem? What are you trying to do?
-
Thanks for replying. Yes, this is with all discs, all that I am trying to do is either play a music cd, or a dvd movie or download software from a cd. It doesn't recognize any cd or dvd.
-
I have adaware and Avast, I did have spybot but did not like it that much, Don't know if this is relevant, just thought I would mention it.
-
So the problem started a few months ago?
Can you recall any changes around the time of the problem? (downloads, installs, hardware changes, ect...)
What is the exact error message?
-
I just put a disc in, I hear it whirling but nothing is showing up on the screen. I click on the power dvd icon and Powerdvd comes up. I click the play button and a grey box shows up that says:
D:/ is not accessible access is denied.
I try and click the eject button and nothing happens. But I still hear the disc whirling inside the PC
-
Back in Device Manager, are there any Yellow Question/Exclamation Marks anywhere?
-
I Don't recall intalling any new software and such a few months aga, just to note: I have tried the system restore, you know that goes back several months or so, and nothing happens. It doens't restore anything.
-
I just looked in the device manager, there are no yellow question marks.
-
It still says that the device is working properly and to troubleshoot if I have any problems, however, the troubleshooting thing is useless, no help at all.
-
I would unplug the power to your computer and then open the case.
Once inside, unplug the CD Drive, and then plug it back in.
Boot the computer and then see how it goes.
-
What might that accomplish? Would that just make it revert back to the original setting?
-
BTW that last comment of mine was not meant to sound smart alec,
-
It's just to make sure nothing is loose or unplugged. ;)
-
ok done, but still the same thing happens when I try and play a disc. This is driving me nuts :(
-
What is the exact error message?
-
D:/ is not accessible access is denied.
-
that is what it says
-
Do you by any chance have more than one user on your computer?
-
no it is just me
-
I'm still doing some searching of my own, but I have few questions.
Can you play Music CD's?
What happens if you try to access the CD via My Computer?
-
I just tried it again and now it says: no disc in Drive d.
-
Even if you have a disc in there?
-
yes, even if I have a dvd or cd in there, it is like there is some kind of confusion within. Even if it is a music cd or any kind of disc.
-
It is always the same response, even if I access through my computer.
-
I just had something very interesting happen. I just downloaded a free trial of Powerdvd and when I put a dvd in, guess what? the box came up saying no disc in drive d. Now this is getting weird.
-
Do you by any chance have a lense cleaner?
Also, I found this topic.
http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php?topic=64891.0;all
It seems like an identical problem, but I am not sure.
I actually have to go for a while, so see what you can do.
Good Luck!
-
I don't have a lense cleanser
-
I see, LOL! thanks for putting up with me mate. I did read through the thread and tried some things, but to no avail.
-
Then, same as Broni, I am out of ideas. :-\
I wonder, can your BIOS be doing this?
If you go into the BIOS Setup, just have a look through and see if you can find anything related the CD Drive.
-
Forgive me, where do I access BIOS?
-
Have a look here:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000192.htm
Same thing as if you were getting into Safe Mode, just a different button.
-
I don't know how to get into safe mode :'(
-
Lol, don't worry.
When you turn on the computer, keep pressing either F1, F2, DEL, ESC or F10
-
ARGH!!!!!!!! Nothing works! What on earth can it be? ???
-
Try removing the CMOS Battery (battery on the motherboard) for about 10 minutes.
Then put it back in and turn the computer on.

(this is what I call troubleshooting :P)

In Device Manager, delete DVD,or CD drives and close it.
Scroll down the below link until you come to the 'Download Guided Help'
It is a small 127kb program download and run the Guided Help program run the program, then reboot your computer.

Hi Thanks for your help with this. I did as
you said to do and the same exact thing is happening, a box says "no disc in drive d and so on.
-
Yes I even did it twice but to no avail. When I go directly onto"My computer" and click it says: "D"/ is not accessible Access is denied" and if I try and run power dvd, it says : Insert disc, even if there is a cd or dvd in there it still says this. I even installed another trial version of pwerdvd and it does the same thing. When I check device manager, there are no yellow question marks, and when I click on it, it says the program is running fine. I have never heard anything like this before, I am totally stumped.
-
Robert... I am a novice, but did this device stop functioning around the same time that you downloaded XP Service Pack 3?
-
Hi French, you know it seems like it did.
-
Did you try system restore to a date before 09/09/2008.or before
you installed SP/3 ?
I have SP/3 installed but, I have never uninstalled SP/3 before.
-
Yes I have tried the system restore.
-
Yes I have tried the system restore.
Do you have any important files to backup?
I think you need to do a repair install,or a complete restore
of your operating system if it will boot with the XP CD.
-
Hi, When I bought this computer, it never came with a cd. Thanks all for taking the time to help, this is the most bizzare PC problem that I have ever encountered, I spent most of last night downloading online dvd players and trying this and that but it is always the same message. No disc in drive D. Thanks again.

Can you find someone with a Windows CD and borrow theirs?
