For the past few weeks I have been having a problem with my moniter losing the signal from the computer the second I try to load higher-end games. Diablo II works fine, but when I try to run games such as World of Warcraft, Battlefield 2, Joint Operations, and NFS Underground.
I switched my graphics card with my friend's to see if that was the problem, but my moniter continued to lose the signal. I have installed new drivers for my video card multiple times and it does nothing. I also have installed the latest DirectX. This also did nothing.
I've been trying troubleshooters but nothing seems to relate to quite to what's happening. The only thing left I can think of being the problem is my motherboard.
Any words of wisdom, anyone?
Thanks

I have installed new drivers for my video card multiple times
Where did you get the drivers from?
-
nvidia.com
-
Step by step, describe what happens when you try and run a game?
-
Everything is working fine - I can surf the internet, listen to music..anything. With World of Warcraft, when I open it the moniter loses the signal before I even get to the log in screen. With other games I lose the signal after the splash screen. Then I have to manually turn off my computer and turn it back on. Today it actually did it after I tried to run a Java application. I'm stumped. ???
Another thing, when I select "Restart" it will shut down and then turn its self back on but the moniter does not come back on. When I select "Shut Down" and then turn the computer back on it works fine.

This is the same person by the way. I just registered.

It sounds like a ram problem to me, do you know how much you have & what the configuration is?
1 stick or 2 etc?
-
That could be the problem actually. When I boot up it checks NVRAM every time and it didn't used to do that.
I have 1 stick of 512mb RAM. Not sure about the speed. I could take it out and find out for you if you like.
-
Swap it with your friend and give it a try.
Just take normal care for static.
-
No that didn't do it...
Also, when the screen does go black, I hear a high pitched sound shut off. Could that have to do with the hard drive?
-
Remember what you did with your video drivers?
Do the same with your sound drivers too.
Gotta run, it's dinner time here.
-
I reinstalled both of those if that's what you mean.
-
1. What type of monitor are you using
2. What type of videocard are you using
3. What drivers/software is installed
4. What is the refresh rate of your monitor set to
-- Are you using ForceRefresh?
5. What resolution is the monitor set to?
-
1. I'm using a Black Elements 17" LCD Monitor, PlanoVision
2. GeForce FX 5900 128mb
3. I've used the drivers included with the card, the drivers from nvidia.com, and installed directx9.
4. 60 Hertz
-- Not that I know of
5. 1152x864
-
Install drivers for the monitor as well.
-
Where can I get those?
-
Try either http://www.driverguide.com or the monitor its manufacturer their webpage
-
Ok, I've installed the driver from that site.
-
You have found the correct driver?
Try using 1024x786x32 at the highest refresh rate that your monitor is capable of.
-
Turn off 'Automatic Reboot on System Failure'.
Forget that LOL.
Can you try your ram in a different slot?
-
OK I did what you said to Raptor, now what?
Where is the Automatic Reboot thing at?
-
Ok, I'll try that
-
Forget that, it's not rebooting.
-
OK I did what you said to Raptor, now what?
Game away and see if it is stable.
-
It is still doing the exact same thing. Switched the RAM too.
-
Can you test the monitor on another computer?
Also be certain that your videocard fans and/or heatsink are not clogged with dust, it may be overheating and shutting down the second you demand performance.
-
Switched the moniter and it works fine on my friend's computer.
I know it's not the video card that's the problem cause I switched that with my friend's too and my computer did the same thing.
-
You may wish to download the latest drivers and install them, but use the following tool once the previous drivers are removed:
Driver Cleaner (http://www.drivercleaner.net/)
-- Removes driver remains after the uninstallation thereof.
-- Read the instructions carefully!
-
Well I did that and now the moniter loses the signal when Windows tries to boot up. Only way it works now is on safe mode.
-
Vga mode.....wrong drivers for video adapter card.....roll back the driver...<f8 key on boot safe mode>.how many fans have you got in the case?dont include the graphics fan!
-
Two 80mm fans - One in rear and one on side panel.
-
1) Boot the computer in safe mode.
2) Open the 'Device Manager'.
3) Double click on the Display Adapter icon.
4) Highlight the current VGA driver & select 'remove'.
5) Select 'Standard VGA' as display driver.
6) Click OK and close.
7) Shutsown the computer.
8) Boot the computer.
9) Go to 'Add New Hardare' in the control panel.
10) Follow the instructions & install the latest drivers.
-
It's still doing the same thing. I give up. I'll just buy new stuff until it works I guess haha.
Thanks a ton for all the help though guys.

Please do send me the hardware you consider broken!
