Title: Upgrading from Me to 2000 Professional?
Post by: Axsel on December 30, 2004, 01:29:33 PM
Is it possible to upgrade from Me to 2000? Me has been buggin' out on me off and on now for a couple of months. I've scanned for viruses, defragmented, reinstalled programs, and uninstalled all non-essiential programs, but it's still not working properly.

Can I install 2000 over Me, or would I have to keep Me and choose between the two at startup? Advice? Help?

Thanks.

Since Win2k was released prior to WinME, moving from WinME to Win2k is considered a downgrade.  If your Win2k disc is a Upgrade disc, not a Full Install disc, it won't work at all.  If Full Install, you can reformat and start over.

So you're saying if I have a full version of 2000, I can install this as if I were upgrading from say Me to XP? Or is it more complicated? And would I be able to keep all my files, etc.? Some programs would have to be reinstalled if they are not supported by 2000, right?

p.s. I'm aware Win2k was released prior to WinMe, but isn't it a better OS anyway? And I'm sure Microsoft doesn't consider going from Me to 2000 a supported path, right?

Thanks

You can't upgrade from ME.  You can upgrade Windows 2000 professional from Windows 98 or Windows NT Workstation.

You can install Windows 2000 on another partition and have a duel boot system or Take ME off and install Windows 2000.

Windows 2000 was primarily designed for the business networks; where as ME was designed mainly for the home user.

Windows 2000 offers a better file system, better security, Encryption File System (EFS), and a more stable platform.

Both Operating Systems were released in the same year.

Win2k is far superior to WinME.  Win98SE is far superior to WinME.  WinME is like Win98 with no DOS.  I would just keep WinME and create a dual-boot.  Does your computer meet the minimum requirements for Win2k?
