Title: HP ScanJet 5200c scanner quit
Post by: judieau on June 19, 2005, 09:39:33 PM
I hope someone can help  ???

My scanner has quit (although its light comes on) so I uninstalled it and downloaded some new drivers.
As soon as it downloaded this message came up:

16 bit Windows Subsystem:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Applications.

Can anyone please interpret this?
thank you :)

Go to c:\windows\repair and copy the autoexec.nt from there into C:\windows\system32.
Then change the attributes to 'read only'.

Thanks Fed for all your help:)

However, bad news, I'm afraid as my scanner will only work up to a point.

I can scan once and the second time it freezes up and yet is still on. It doesn't freeze up the rest of my programs, however.

So, then I reboot and hey presto! it works again perfectly...but only once.
When it freezes I press alt ctrl dlte and the task manager says it's not responding so then I have to reboot yet again.

Please help again!

Try putting back your old drivers now that the autoexec.nt is fixed.

merlin_2:
Ok, but could you please tell me what a reg patch is?

Fed: how do I put my old drivers back please?

Thank you and sorry I seem such a dummy  :-[

You should have the drivers on the disk that came with the scanner.
Failing that, Google for the scanner manufacturer and download some new ones. The last ones you got may have not been the right ones.
You need to have the make & exact model # etc.
Also make sure the drivers suit your operating system too.

I have done what you suggested Fed but no luck I'm afraid :(

Before I received help here someone told me to do a repair and also I should put the config.nt file (& the autoexec.nt file) into the System32 folder which I did.  They also told me to make that and the autoexec.nt file read only.  Is that correct?
I noticed there is a config.tmp file there too so I don't know what that is.

There just seems to be a hiccup after my first scan.  It just won't repeat it, yet the light is on (but the hamster isn't home..lol) and it's all ready to go.
I like challenges and never say die, but this one has me tossed!

Thanks for all your help, even if you can't puzzle this one out :)

Here's the article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767
Forget about the config.tmp file, it's nothing.
Have you had a good scratch around in your scanner software to stop it being a one shot wonder?

Fed & merlin_2,

Thanks for all your help and I have done everything you both suggested but my scanner is a stubborn mule and won't co-operate.

One of the reasons is I found out that XP Home SP2 does not support my scanner according to this site:

http://www.ntcompatible.com/cdetail11775.html

As you can see Microsoft and HP are nutting it out but I won't wait with bated breath..lol  Looks like I'm in for a new scanner.
Strangely enough my scanner worked before my computer crashed recently.  Then someone reinstalled XP Home but with SP2 so that's obviously the reason it won't work.
From all I've heard about SP2 I don't think I'm game to uninstall and reinstall it.

Anyway, we got to the bottom of it and I'm very grateful for all your help:)

I still doubt that it's an XP problem.
I think the scanning operation of the software would be somewhat 'stand alone' from Windows.
Do you have access to a different computer to try it on?
Perhaps the scanner itself is faulty?
Seeing it work properly on a different computer would prove it one way or another.

You might be right Fed because

Sorry about that..here's the rest of the post. :-[

You might be right that it could be faulty Fed because I tried it on a Dell computer with XP Pro and it didn't even recognize it.

This is a follow on link from Merlin's....

Have a good read, then check your virtual memory settings & try to scan at 72dpi  ???
In fact try all the cleanup stuff they recommend.

uninstall the scanner.......from the device manager....and uplug it.....now reboot pc........and remove the software for it....shutdown pc///reboot ...........now load the software first.......and then attach the scanner...see if it works...........i have see this problem before with hp/scanners /printers.......you could also run a scanner test....go to the control panel......click the scanner/camera icon.....and test it.....

Fed & merlin_2

Thanks to both of you for your help with my scanner problems once again:)

However, I tried all that you suggested and it just won't come to the aid of the party, so have invested in a u-beaut all-in-one HP 2355 scanner.
I've had no problems installing it and it's working like a dream, so I do think my older scanner had had its day.

We tried my old one again on the Dell computer and it worked 4 times then gave up the ghost.

Anyway, you tried your very best to help and I'm very grateful to you, so thank you again:)
