I ahve been using this computer for a good 5 years and today, when I inserted my Sims 2 disc, I thought it was odd that the autoplay did not show up. Then, I clicked the icon instead, only to find that my disc drive did not even pick up that there was a disc in it. I tried other games to see if it was just this one game that wasn't working or if it was every game that it didn't read - it turned out to be the latter. None of my games will run because the drive doesn't pick up that there's even a cd in the computer. Please help!
My System Properties:
Micosoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3
My computer is about 5 years old and is a gateway.

It sounds like you need a new optical drive. But before you spend any money I would suggest opening the case and making sure that the cables for the drive are seated properly and that the Molex(power connector) are connected properly.

Also Try cleaning the laser if you have a cleaning kit handy. Might help.

Do what quatos said. Take the plugs out of the cd drive and then try to replug them in. If it still doesnt work, they are really cheap. You can get a dvd drive for around $20

Try an audio disc / music CD. It probably won't work, but I'm just curious.
Have you worked inside of a computer? Are you comfortable doing so?
It is not all that terribly difficult, but it depends on your experience, and how you feel about it.

I'd like to bump this thread as I'm experiencing the exact same problem as the original poster. Curious if the OP has found a solution?
Thx :)
