My CD/DVD drive suddenly went missing. Here's the dope:
6+ year old PC, running Windows XP, SP3. Always updated. Explorer 7. CD/DVD drive is LG using, B's Recorder, Gold 5 ver. 5.32, B's Clip ver. 5.32 and nero DVD ver 5.0.
I did something that, I suppose, could be involved: I had un-installed ITunes. After that the CD/DVD went missing. No other unusual events to this computer; it's been running fine and I try to keep it cleaned up.
I went into device manager and it had a yellow, "!" on the CD drive listed. I clicked on troubleshooting and it said it could not see a driver, (as I remember). Or driver was corrupted. I followed instructions and inserted the B's disc. It would not recognize the disc. I un-installed B's entirely, hoping that it could all be re-installed fresh. I re-booted. I inserted B's disc and it cannot be recognized as well as no evidence of the computer seeing the CD drive at all. (Under, "computer," no icon of CD drive)
I may have went at this wrong, but it made sense to try in this manner at the time.
So I came here and did search. I found a link to a MS Windows, "fix," for such things that addressed corrupted registry segments. The instructions warned the fix could cause problems if not followed exactly...that scared me. Then I found reference to, "CDGone," fix that looked promissing. I stopped at that point and decided to post here before I got myself into further trouble.
Thoughts? Or, how do I tell if my CD drive just died?

Follow the instructions to delete upper and lower filters - let's see if that helps.

One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...

Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch (http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip)
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

However, remember I said I un-installed all my CD/DVD software in, "add remove programs," so I do not have my CD drive there any longer. Not only that, it will not install, "fresh," either. I put the LG install disc in the drive, (which closes), the green LED blinks a few times as always, but then goes dark and the drive is not recognized. My idea had been to reload fresh, thinking the install disc would write everything in new again. I guess....dumb me....
So if I use your two suggestions, I'm trying all that on something that no longer exists.

I really don't understand what you are talking about. CD drives do not require any software or drivers to work.

First, I'm far from any expert on computers but you folks are which is why I'm here. I do try to keep informed and take care of maintenance, etc.
I'll run through again what I have:
The factory disc that came with this computer is, "BHA," by LG, (front of DVD/CD drive has the LG logo too). On the disc lable it lists this software: "B's Recorder, Gold 5 ver 5.32, B's Clip ver 5.32 and nero DVD ver 5.0." So I figured that was all the stuff to use the CD/DVD reader/burner. And in my computer's list of programs it listed B's Clip and another of what was just mentioned.
So I figured that was software that ran the whole drive.
I don't understand, then, what I'm mixing up??

The software you have are utilities (cd burning software, etc) to be used in conjunction with the drive, but it has nothing to do with the the drive itself. The drive will work just fine with or without such software.

Ahhhh. I had no idea it worked that way. I thought without the software, it would not work at all.
Soooooo. I can now go to the first couple of suggestions in this thread and continue to put them to work.

Wow. Allan, your first link to the MSoft fix worked fine. It did require me to download NetFramework, which I did. At the end, it indicated I had, "class filter drivers corrupted." Must have happened when I un-installed iTunes.
