Title: Removing AVG 8.0
Post by: Kenter on October 22, 2008, 09:07:39 PM
Hello all!

I've been trying to remove AVG 8.0 but I keep getting the following error:

Local machine: installation failed
    Installation:
Error: Action failed for file searchshield.jar: creating backup....
            Error 0x80070020 %DESTINATION% = "C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\Firefox\Chrome\searchshield.jar.install_backup", %SOURCE% = "C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\Firefox\Chrome\searchshield.jar"
                Error 0x80004004

I don't know why it's doing this but it's driving me crazy. I've searched all over google I've searched these forums to no avail. I'm running Windows Xp SP3.

Cool Thanks Broni!! I can't believe how AVG became such a trashy Anti-Virus so quickly It use dto be so good back in the 7.0 series. But thats ok thats why I've got Avast! now.

For a reason...
I posted this on another forum, couple of days ago:

I actually went to AVG forum, and went through all threads from last 48 hours.

They have 4 forums regarding AVG 8.0 issues:
- AVG 8.0 Free Edition
- AVG 8.0 Free Edition - Installation Issues
- AVG 8.0 Free Linkscanner Issues
- AVG 8.0 Free Scanning Issues

I gathered some statistics only from the first one.

They had:
- 27 separate threads about update problems
- 4 about resident shield not staying up
- 3 about installation problem
- 2 about email scanner problem

How can I recommend any program like this?

How can I recommend any program like this?

The short answer is "no", you can't. ::)

I'm still using AVG7.5 and getting all updates as normal, it's as if nothing has changed.

Hey Fed. Thanks for that valuable info, because as we know AVG's latest deadline was 08/31, and I wasn't able to find out, if automatic updates are still working, or not,  in 7.5.
I guess, their previous deadline set at 12/31 may hold, or even been extended, if 8.0 problems continue.

Oh no AVG 8.0 is back from the dead!! I used Revo Uninstaller and it shows AVG as gone but yet it keeps loading back up every restart! I even deleted the registry so that way there would be no way it could come back but it LIVES!! lol

Surely, it's present. Is it listed in Add\Remove?

No it's not listed in Add/Remove or Revo Uninstaller

OK, let's try an easy option, first.
1. Download & save the latest AVG Free installation package from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
2. Run the AVG Free install file
3. Choose the Uninstall option and follow the setup wizard, when you get to the part to remove user settings, select it.
4. Restart your computer then...
5. Post fresh HJT log.

Sorry for not updating regularly Broni but life has been very hectic lately. Here is the latest: I downloaded the AVG free file you gave the link to. It tells me that AVG 7 is installed on this system and it is not recommended to install AVG 8. Without first removing AVG 7.

So I tried to go to the file of AVG 8 in the start menu and try the uninstall from there. It then tells me this: Uninstall failed! 1 error occured, Click details to show information. Then under details it says: (Local machine: prepared for the installation Installation:Error: Uninstallation is not possible. Product not installed.) That's where we are at the moment.

What have we got for the hard option?

I have only been able to update my free version of AVG once, it never allows me to update.

OK.
Give me fresh HJT log.

I'm sorry Broni but I said in my last post that the AVG Free installer doesn't have the uninstall option. It only has the new install option listed.

I had the same issue...
Tried almost everything (disbling services, regedits, you name it...), except....
I was like: Surfing till my eyes are crossed and no-one a solution on my errors, trying to uninstall / reinstall AVG? I did the unthinkable (meaning: I never thought of it!)
I searched for: avg uninstaller... Et voila! Where do I find a tool for it? at AVG itself!
It's called AVG Remover
Run the program and perfectly, everything is gone  ;D

If you need it you can find it at: http://www.avg.com/download-tools (http://www.avg.com/download-tools)
Hope this will help others as well  ;)
