Title: monitor won't come on
Post by: mackie on August 29, 2010, 06:38:00 AM
I know the monitor is working--have checked it--but am sure it is programed not to come on but can't alter this as I can't bring up the page of the program to make the change as the computer screen is black. How can I see the program to set it to turn on the monitor?? ???

No idea what you are talking about. Please start at the beginning and tell us the entire story.

OK When I first turn on my PC, the monitor is on but nothing shows on the screen but a black screen but the on light for the mnitor is blinking and I can hear the monitor running. It will come up in DOS saying the pc was improperly shut down but when I exit dos it will not show me anything but a black screen. I am quite sure the PC has been programed not to turn the monitor on but since i can't see whats going on i cant change it???

Let's start at the beginning please. When you first boot the system, is there anything on the display at all? If so, at what point does the display go blank?

Computer comes up displaying that the PC was shut down improperly and asks if I want to open as usual and when I say ok and tell it to restore and open as usual the computer begins to process but the monitor goes dark and stays in sleep mode. The light is on on the front but the screen is black.

Okay, then let's go back to safe mode. When the system first boots start tapping the F8 key until you see the boot option menu. From there, select safe mode. What happens?

OK Did this. It says it is operating in safe mode. Allso says to be sure the cpu speed conforms to specs of the cpu and gives options of 3466mhx, 2600 or manual. It's at 3466 when it opened. It said to load setup defaults which I have done. Hit save and exit which i have done--screen goes black and that's as far as i can get --Once it came on after i left it a few days but it said i neede to update a file so i did and it rebooted and went back to black screen. I am quite sure there is a program setting i changed that affected the monitor and if i could get in i could reverse it but need to be able to see it on screen to fix it.
Thank-you for trying. Would gladly accept any further suggestions.

OK you keep making references to a program stopping the monitor from coming on yet when asked to start at the beginning and explain what happened you do mention anything about making any changes in your system. So lets start once again.

Please tell us what was done to the computer between the time it was last working properly until it stopped working properly. Did you install/remove any hardware/software? Did you make any major changes with in your syste?

I am quite sure there is a program setting i changed that affected the monitor and if i could get in i could reverse it but need to be able to see it on screen to fix it.

What program did you make the change in?
