Title: Holy crap, it worked! Dead video card resurrected!
Post by: Computer Hope Admin on June 02, 2009, 06:28:11 PM
I wouldn't ever recommend something like this but it is an interesting story (with pics) of an individual who fixed issues with his video card by putting it in the oven.

Quote
sooooooo, i removed all bits from the card including the i/o shield and placed it gpu side down with the card raised up on 3 sides by tiny balls of aluminum foil and placed it on a very thin cookie sheet. i preheated the oven to 385f, put the card in and waited around 8-10 minutes. i carefully removed the cookie sheet and placed it on top of the oven to cool down naturally. waited about an hour and voila! =D

im now torn as to whether i should sell this card for cheap to someone or keep it as a backup.

The original poster talks about the theory of heating the card in the oven, and how it might melt solder joints enough to re-establish connections.  Then he goes on to ask the above question.

I wonder if he'd buy it from himself if he knew its history...  ::)

I get that you understand the problem is them an starting to draw conculsions after what I posted.  I made a post about it a while back for those that recall.  Also, it could be fixed if I had like a small solder iron but its pointless when I got other cards to really fix this one.

I've heard of this before, but I just passed it off as an urban legend or hoax. I would never ever suggest anyone try this though.

Well, there's stuff I'll try on my own system that I won't recommend to anyone.  If I did resurrect a video card in such a manner, I don't think I'd have the heart to sell it to anyone.

Having read the story it sounds to me that it was either try SOMETHING or toss it. So he decided to try this and gives credit to another for the idea. Demonstrates class and thinking out of the box. If our earlier ancestors didn't chip a couple of stones together we could still be reading by starlight and freezing in our caves. I might have wanted to clean up my oven and pots and pans however before i created a visua

Look, two months ago, I stuck a dead hard drive in the freezer.  Didn't do any good, but it was worth a try.  I might try to revive a video card in an oven, but I certainly wouldn't try to sell it once I did!

You have already established in prior threads you have never used eBay...
That makes you un-qualified to comment on your experience with it...
Let's not go thru this again please.
