Title: Outlook Express, Folder Could Not be Displayed
Post by: tdk99 on April 05, 2006, 12:44:28 AM
When I try to use Outlook Express, I regularly get a message that the "Folder could not be displayed".  It then lists possible problems are low memory or low disk space.  I have plenty of memory to run all of my other applications and I have 75% unused disk space.  What may be the problem and how can I fix it?

Do you have Outlook Express optioned to go straight to your Inbox on opening?
Do you have millions of emails in your Inbox?
Just kicking ideas around here. ;)

Yes, Outlook Express will open but after downloading a few emails or after using it for about 15 minutes, this "Folder Could Not Be Displayed" message pops up, and I cannot access any messages via Outlook Express anymore unless I reboot.

Is your computer free of viruses and malware?
If you think it's OK then do some quick online scans to be sure.

Online Virus Scan and Spyware Scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Highly recommended second Online Malware Scan
http://www.ewido.net/en/

Let's see what happens then.

Fed,

I don't have millions of emails.  It is a funny thing.  I have Comcast as my ISP and about every other month all of my emails disappear (around 4000).  I have talked to Comcast about this but they don't know their head from a hole in the wall.  This happened last week, so I now only have about 100 emails.  Any ideas?

Forget Ewido, it doesn't work for 98.
Try A squared.

FED, I ran pandasoftware, but I am still having the problem.  In fact, now I can open OE but it will not display any messages, even from the start.  HELP!

This makes no sense.  Are you using POP mail?  Do you have your email setup so that messages stay on the Comcast mail server even after you've downloaded them to OE?  With POP mail, once you've downloaded mail to your OE, they stay in OE until YOU delete them; Comcast has no control over what you do with the messages you have in OE.

Soybean,

Yes, it is a POP3 server.  However, in the advanced tab, I have the box checked to save these messages on the server.  I think I checked this box after about the third time of losing all of my messages off of Outlook Express.  I think Comcast told me that I could go back and look at my messages through the Comcast web site if I lost them in Outlook Express, with this box checked.  And yes, I am able to see my messages through Comcast but not Outlook Express.  Does that help at all?

I see no such setting in OE; the only screen under Tools, Options, that has an Advanced button is Security, and that has nothing to do with setting messages to be left on the server.  So, exactly what screen and setting in OE are you talking about?

Soybean,

I went to TOOLS, ACCOUNTS, MAIL highlighted COMCAST, PROPERTIES, ADVANCED, DELIVERY, Checked the box titled, "leave a copy of message on the server".  Does that help?  I also use OE for an online class that I teach but this option is not available for the University server.  Does that make any sense?

OK, yes, that makes sense.  How many days do you have set there?  Does it make sense that you would accumulate 4,000 messages, based on the number of days you have set in OE?  Can you tell whether a lot of spam is running that message count up quite fast?  With your ISP, do you have any spam filtering options that stops certain spam and directs to a folder other-than your online Inbox?
