PIII 800MHz machine with 384mg ram, clean install of Windows 2000 with all updates and service packs. There are 4 pci slots and the brand new modem is not seen in any of them. I thought it might be a bad card so I took it back, got another (same make and model) and got the same result.
In device manager there is no modem listed, scanned for new hardware after inserting in each of the pci slots. I thought that maybe it needed drivers to be seen, but the installation disk exited saying that no device was detected. The slots work as there is a nic card loaded and recognized. I tried the nic in all the slots and it was seen and worked fine in each.
Took the second card back and the store installed it in an XP machine and I am wiping the egg of my face because it showed the new hardware window and the drivers loaded from the CD with no problem. I am heading back there on Monday because I want their technician to load it in a Win2k machine.
Until then, any ideas on why it was not seen?
Thanks

Were the MBoard drivers re-installed after the clean Win2K install > >
How are the PCI devices listed in Device Manager ?
You could try right clicking them and removing them and see if Windows re-installs them...

The computer is about 7 years old and the motherboard drivers loaded up fine. In device manager there are no yellow or red indicated devices. The card in the pci slot is the nic and it shows up under network adapters. The nic reinstalled without a problem.
Thanks

Did you try removing the NIC first and removing it from Device Manager and then re-booting once or twice ...then power down, install the modem and see if it's detected properly.
BTW is this a WinModem ? ?
If so buy another brand.

Did not try the remove and reboot for the nic, will try that next. The company that makes the modem is Encore and the card brand is Agere. Apparently they have a large line of products and mine is the first problem this store owner has encountered.
Thanks

Try getting new drivers and with the card installed run the setup for the drivers. Sometimes the hardware won't show up until the drivers are installed. Than it does a search for that make and model modem.
