Title: HIGH memory usage!
Post by: steveo89 on July 22, 2007, 05:59:38 AM
My computer has been acting VERY strange. I reformatted 2 days ago and put in a fresh installation of Windows XP Home LEGIT and updated all the drivers. Since the time I installed windows until now it has been slow as a mule and freezes for 10 seconds at a time, randomly. Even when it's just sitting there. First thought was spyware or virus, but I ran scans with all the good anti-everything and came up with nothing. I've rebooted multiple times. Take a look at this screen I took, explorer.exe has been rising rapidly in mem usage and i dont understand. it does it just sitting there with no programs open. It's been up to 1,000,000 K+ of VM if it sits there long enough.  It can't be a virus because it happend as soon as i installed windows and wasnt connected to internet at the time. I really would NOT like to reinstall again unless it is my last option. My computer used to be fast as lightening before reformat, so idk, drivers are updated and everything, sigh

Does it act like this in Safe Mode as well?
Have you installed SP2 yet?
Have you tried defragmenting?
And, just out of curiosity, what protection do you have installed?

Adding to CBMatt's help. Microsoft has a malicious software removal
tool.  See the link below.
