I'd like to first thank Calum and Kip for bringing this to my attention.
CH has been given a yellow rating by Mcafee Siteadvisor due to a download.
Check it out - http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/computerhope.com/downloads/1859945/
Just thought you might want to know, not sure if their rating is accurate but I doubt it this time.
I looked into this, downloaded the file they claimed was infected and ran through multiple different scans and came up with nothing. Makes me a little less willing to suggested a product like this that is falsely accusing Computer Hope of being an unsafe destination. However, that being said in case anyone is worried Computer Hope is 100% safe. I've attempted to contact McAfee, but who know what if anything will be done. This file has been on Computer Hope easily 5+ years I'd guesstimate around 7-8 years. Which makes this claim even more outrageous.
-
I had posted that as a heads up...didn't know it had been brought up before.
I had the same problem with Site Advisor as well...
Took them long enough to fix the problem.

A screenshot from McAfee Site Advisor about ComputerHope:
Nathan posted his comment:
I'm the owner and WebMaster of Computer Hope and although McAfee claims that one of the files (mscdx221.exe) is infected with a Trojan I strongly believe they're mistaken after running this file through multiple different scanners and having this file on the server for over five years. Computer Hope is a safe and friendly space for all Internet users of all ages.
I think, all of us should post there.

I wasn't aware of this thread, and I started new topic about it at The Bar.
-
I saw the post in the Bar about this and as you have already done. I'd appreciate everyone to make comments and/or complain to McAfee. I sent them an e-mail but they just sent back a traditional template e-mail. ::)
I found it funny how the Trojan they're reporting copies a few files to some directory (which they indicated this file doesn't do) and also modifies the registry AGAIN something this file doesn't do.
Sigh..
-
I posted a comment.
-
Done.
Thanx for the heads up...
-
From the tons of replies, I can see how many people care....oh, well.
Hey patio, I just raised your hand. Did you feel it?

Thanks for everyone who's made a comment on this. I've said "yes" to each of your posts as being helpful. :) I also merged the topics since two were going and one was going in Don's which not all members can see.
I did receive the below response e-mail from McAfee.
Hello,
Thank you for contacting us and your interest in SiteAdvisor.
SiteAdvisor engineers will look into your issue, and will issue a change if it is deemed appropriate.
Thank you for your patience during this process.
Sincerely,
Jim

-
Judging from Saviour's site similar experience, it may take about a month before those morons will react.
-
Wait a second....where is my Merge button?
-
If you and/or other malware specialists believe it's necessary it could be added.
-
It'd be great. I posted about it another day. From time to time, I see topic, which should be merged.
-
Yes, Nathan...
As Broni stated, I had an issue with McAfee's Site Advisor, as well. It took a while for them to fix the issue, but I have since overhauled the site, so McAfee doesn't even have a rating for me yet.
I submitted my site to them for review, weeks ago, but they still haven't reviewed it.
Problem is...they take entirely too long when it comes to fixing an issue that shouldn't have evolved in the first place.
I had started a thread about this one file, just as a heads up, but since it was already brought to your attention...I deleted it.
I will go to Site Advisor...and put in my two cents...not that it'll make things go any faster... ;D
It can't hurt...
-
Thanks for that information Steve and appreciate the feedback you posted on McAfee's page. I was browsing through a few other sites using this utility and tried digg.com, I find it interesting how they have numerous warnings on their page (shown below) yet still has a green check mark.
Digg warnings:
Adware, spyware, or viruses (5)
Phishing or other scams (3)
Bad shopping experience (1)
I'm assuming it's because they have 104 This site is good ratings, so maybe if we can't get McAfee to do anything we can get the community to give enough good ratings to allow the site to reclaim its green check mark.
-
...we can get the community to give enough good ratings to allow the site to reclaim its green check mark.
Just posted at SiteAdvisor.
-
Looks like McAfee gave a Yellow Rating (http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/bleepingcomputer.com?ref=safe&client_ver=FF_26.6_6269&locale=en-US&premium=false&client_type=FF&aff_id=0) to BleepingComputer also for their Spyware Doctor download.
-
And it looks like it was caused by Spyware Doctor...
C'mon McAfee...give us a break!
-
Looks like McAfee gave a Yellow Rating to BleepingComputer
This is getting even more ridiculous.
Oh, I just noticed "Merge" button. I appreciate this, Nathan :)
-
As far as I know it's Mcafee's rating, not the user rating, that determines the site's yellow, red or green status.
All I can say is, at least it's not Symantec.
-

If that's true check Diggs rating (http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/digg.com), unless of course McAfee just manually changed Diggs rating to a green rating even with the warnings.
-
I'm pretty sure the McAfee rating is biased with certain sites. Nothing to prove it though. I've seen this before with their competitors sites being given bad ratings. Since BC got a yellow for the Spyware Doctor download it makes you wonder...
-
Sorry I had to come out of my shell but I hope we get this fixed cus were not bad site Mc affees just jealous.
I downloaded site adviser yesterday to work with WOT and I noticed it was yellow I hope we get this fixed and if we need anyhelp PM and tell me what to do/
-
Other than that I call Shenanigans
-
BTW can I get a PM telling Mscdx221.exe is used for?
AND REMEMBER KIDS WE NEEDA GET RIDA DEM GIANT WORMS AND VIRUSES FROM OUR COMPUTAHOPE!
-
Unfortunately, as helpful as it can be, SiteAdvisor is fairly inaccurate sometimes. You really have to pay more attention to the user ratings rather than McAfee's ratings. Regardless, CH really shouldn't have a yellow warning, especially not because of one single harmless file. I've seen very spammy sites get green ratings, so it's really silly.
-
Hey Nathan, it may not be a bad idea to go to the McAfee free forums (http://community.mcafee.com/) and log a complaint there. Others have done so and seems to get the attention of those in control a little quicker.
I really do think this yellow thing is bad and can hopefully be fixed ASAP. I advise everyone I help in malware removal to install site advisor. Now we're yellow..
Bleeping Computer already got their green rating back. I'm not surprised as there are probably more than a few McAfee employees who visit the site. It just confirms that the ratings are biased though!
Edit: I just started a thread (http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?p=522802#post522802) at McAfee with my scan results for the file. Maybe someone will listen.
-
Good idea. I've posted there, as well.
-
Got an answer from a Moderator.
Not sure if anyone from SiteAdvisor will be reading things here at the weekend so I advise you to also fill in the form here: http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?t=217274 (http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?t=217274)

Yep. I think, it should be left to Nathan to file in there.
-
Yea, I can complain but that part needs to be done by the owner. Oh Nathaaaan......
-
Probably playing golf with patio....LOL
-
I know I'm supposed to be on break, but just pop in from time to time to check messages and replies.
Glad you guys did this...hopefully, it'll light a fire underneath someone's "you know what".
On another note...I submitted my site for testing weeks ago...if you do a search for Saviour PC...you'll see the site hasn't even been tested yet.
Talk about "slow"...
All my best to you, Nathan...on getting this issue resolved...
Steve
-
BTW...My web site had a rating problem with WOT.
They responded very same day: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/index.php?showtopic=32613
I guess, they're pretty new on the market, so maybe they care more.

Nice thread - I especially liked how they presented as "logic" their own, ARBITRARY, algorithm for rating.
-
This is exactly what drove me nuts.

Way to go, Carbon!:
"Have fun relaxing.
We'll miss you. Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
10 bucks he will visit this site within the next 3 days."
-
Siteadvisor is losing credibility in my eyes, and I have told Mcafee that in those exact words.
My site hasn't been tested either, and I submitted it months ago.
How many people do you think work there . . . a peanut and a chimpanzee?
Sorry to any Mcafee employee reading this but this is really beginning to grate on me.
-
Mcaffee doesnt care that just want there paycheck
-
Yea, I can complain but that part needs to be done by the owner. Oh Nathaaaan......
I've contacted McAfee on the siteadvisor feedback and they've just given me the same response they've given you on their forums. That they're looking into it. I'm sure they're just filing the complaint into their important folder (aka trash bin). Not really sure if it'd be worth my time to register on the forum to complain about it because going directly to the siteadvisor feedback page didn't help.
-
Another reply on how the rating system works.
Have you looked into this anymore Nathan?

http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?t=217274
-
Yeah I've already read through and completed all the steps the first day this was brought up. I did receive a canned response back from McAfee saying that the request was escalated and nothing has been done since then and i've not received any further e-mails.
I guess I can register on the forum and mention this. But I really don't think I can do anything. I'm sure it's just in their list of things to do. Even though they're a huge company and should be able to resolve things quickly I'm doubting this is on their priority list.
-
I started this thread. http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?t=222118
Bleeping Computer already got their green rating back so I figured we needed to make more noise.
-
My Post there was removed and i'm unable to log into the Forums there....ridiculous !

My Post there was removed
Did you swear a lot??
-
lol BTW someone did swear somewere on there

No...i was very civil in fact.
Of course questioning their Management skills in a very proffessional manner can sound like swearing to the incompetent....
-
Do you still have your post saved?
I'd love to quote it, and SOBs some questions :)

so we fix this problem yet?

They're apparently investigating it. I think it's only fair we give them a month to work out the bugs on their end. I've also thought about removing this file from Computer Hope to resolve this issue. But since it's not infected I think removing it would only give the impression that at one time Computer Hope had infected files on its servers.

If you can, I'd like you to comment on all that investigation, I triggered, about your missing reply: http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?p=523451&posted=1#post523451

Thanks, patio.
Would you mind, if I PM a mod there with your email address, you signed in with? If so, was it the one @gmail.com?

That's for the SiteAdvisor reviews, not the forums. http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/

I think that's the source of confusion regarding the missing post,
-
Must be.....LOL
-
On a top of it, I can see patio's post:
Thousands of visitors there have recieved FREE help in regards to solving Computer issues.
I myself have been a long standing Member.
I find it ludicrous that a FREE Help Forum winds up rated errounesly in this manner.
Anyone listening out there ? ?..........Hello ? ?
Posted at 07/07/2008-05:01:29 PM by patio,
so, now, I have no idea what he was complaining about.....dah
-
I read the topic on their forums (not Patio's). Very interesting...
-
is there a way to turn the rating off for this site so I dont freak out everytime I google Computer Hope??
-
Short of disabling Site Advisor, no.
Why are you freaking out? You're not new here.
-
I don't know about everyone else, but the latest update for SiteAdvisor has made it quite annoying for me. No matter what I do, I can't get the darn thing to hide when I start IE. I'm tempted to mess around with the registry, but I think I'm too lazy to bother with it.
-
Do you mean hide from the toolbar? What have you tried so far?
-

??
-
I don't recall any updates for FF.
-
Do you mean hide from the toolbar? What have you tried so far?
Yep, that's what I mean. So far, I've only tried the standard stuff: trying the hide feature, disabling SiteAdvisor, updating, reinstalling. So far, the only thing that works is reinstalling SiteAdvisor and not letting it update. I was looking around online and I have read that for some reason, the latest update is making so the toolbar can't be hidden. I'm hoping this will be fixed sometime soon.
-
Could be McAfee doesn't want you to disable it...
...and I thought I was strict. ;)
-
Ha ha, that does indeed sound like a tactic that McAfee would use, but I like to think that this was actually an accident like they say it is. But I won't hold my breath...
-
Still getting no where with this, latest post (http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?p=525471&posted=1#post525471).

It's becoming a bit of an insult now.
I urge everyone to let Nathan handle this from here on unless he says otherwise. Causing comotion on their forums probably won't do any good and might make us look bad.

Actually my neigbor had siteadvisor today and when he saw the rating she wouldnt let me go any farther.
I told him nothings wrong with the site and if you want help then we should post a question on computerhope.
he didnt believe me.
-
I agree that it's best to just let Nathan deal with this. At the moment, the guys on the McAfee forum seem to be on our side; let's not mess that up. It took Saviour PC awhile, but they finally got their green rating. If we are patient and deal with things in an adult fashion, I have no doubt that we will get the green rating as well.

To clarify - I'll contribute to the lawyer fee (see linked post) if Nathan decides to pursue that avenue and wants help. Otherwise, I'll stay out.

I find it very amusing that I just registered with SiteAdviser, and Yahoo! placed the verification email in the spam folder.... ;D Also, I can't seem to be able to log in....
-
I don't use Siteadvisor - any update on this situation? Is CH still on the dark side?
