Any suggestions
Yes. Try to explain to us what you are talking about.

No need to let the battery run down as a way to force a shutdown. Just hold the power button down for 4 seconds; on most systems, that will turn the power off.
I see them in task manage and cannot stop them.
Exactly what process were you trying to stop, and why?

Thanks for your interest. I have restarted computer. I get to the screen check user name. i check it and nothing happens. Where do i go to now?

At some point you'll provide us with some background and details and then we may be able to provide some intelligent assistance.

Ok - I just got to the desktop (it took 10 minutes).
Everything is very slow. Before, the programs were non-responsive.
I don't know yet about now.
Some of the processes running were/are things I don't need -
such as Google desktop, Adobe update, ipod something.
My 5 year old grandson played with the machine.

Download & run Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel and uncheck any processes you don't want starting with the system. You might also want to go to the malware section of this forum and follow the instructions at the top of that page so your system can be checked for malware (just in case). If there's anything else you want help with you need to provide details.

Clicking on the desktop icons - no response.
I have a 5 year old IBM Thinkpad with Windows XP Professional
I just read your last note. I cannot get onto the internet.
I'm on another macine in my home taliking to you.

Then by all means go to the malware forum and follow the instructions in the announcement at the top of that page.

PROBLEM SOLVED.
My grandson broke the mouse. I saw something earlier about problems with a mouse, but didn't make any connection initially. I tried the built-in and everything worked fine.
I took the mouse from the other macine and it works.
Thank you all for your help and concern.

Glad you got it worked out. Thanks for posting back.
