Is your caps locks also affected?

1. Before Windows loads, press F8
2. Select last known good configuration from the list and press enter.

I am not quite certain what you can do if you are able to access safe mode.

I would certainly attempt to clean the registry using a registry scanner.

You may also wish to look into this (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmc_str_bjid.asp) article explaining you how to use the recovery console on the Windows XP bootable CD-ROM.

Unless you have specifically installed the recovery console, you will need the disc; recovery is a boot option when booting from the CD.

Are you certain that system restore (rstrui.exe) is not installed. Do a SEARCH to find out. Could be another problem.

Hope this helps. 8)

Please turn off your CAPS. Very annoying.

Hi

Thanks for replying. I get the message "windows cannot find "rstrui.exe"", so I assume it is missing.

Thanks

This link may help you re-install system restore:

Good luck. 8)

I'm very curious as to where all those misplaced discs go. Oh well, the mysteries of life.

Hi

Thanks for replying I really appreciate your help. I have tried this already and I need the disc. When I bought my new computer last year Windows had already been installed and I didn't think to check if they had included the disc, I will have to give the computer shop a call and find out.

Thanks

If you need to make an XP CD you could always try this method...

OEM CDR (http://forums.techguy.org/t334698.html)

And if you only need the Recovery Console you could give RC.ISO a try by burning it to an 80mm MiniCD.
