help!
:L
i have a new 16gb usb 2.0 today i tried transfering a little over 1 gig from my hard drived onto it and it took 30mins or so. The transfer rate was no more that 2mbps and it is really annoying me. Ive searched the net for solutions but have come across none that would fix my problem.
I am running vista home premium sp2 and my laptop is usb 2.0 enabled.
any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

bump???

Turn off indexing service on the hard drive...
Then Clik Here... (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932170/en-us)
-
that doesnt solve my problem though?
thats for copying large files too and from old OS's to and from vista?
The resolution in that link says "get the latest vista service pack" and i have it already?
I have vista sp2 so...?
-
Is the drive enclosure rated at USB 2.0?
Keep in mind that the transfer rates are affected by more than just the USB speeds as well.
-
Do you mean are my ports 2.0 enabled?
as in '... Enhanced Host Controller ..."
if so yes they are...
if not, what do you mean?
:L
-
Okay, what else do you have running?
How is your antivirus software set, was it scanning what you were writing?
-
i am running avg 8.5 (paid version)
how do i check if it is scanning the files?
-
I don't use AVG I use Avast, but I assume that it will give you that option in it's set up somewhere.
Let me see if I can find that.
Are you using a hub to connect the external drive, or is it connected via pure USB.
-
I figured it out,
i turned resident shield off and tried, but the transfer rate is still the same...
The usb is connected directly to my laptop.
I was thinking, earlier i tried another usb which i believe is 1.1 (well i think it is because i checked its properties and it didnt say anything about it being a 2.0 device) and the transfer rate was like 10mbps+
Is it possible that my ports are some how running at 1.1 speed or compatability only?
-
It is, have you checked your BIOS?
What model is it?
-
I was wondering about that...
My knowledge for that side of computing is quite limited, would you be able to run me through on how to do it?
My computer is a Compaq Presario CQ60 Notebook
-
You should be able to access the BIOS using the del or F2 key. At the beginning of your post does it say to press *whatever key to enter startup?
-
You mean when i boot my computer up? Before my computer boots my OS? Press w/e key to enter setup?
-
Yeah, that's the one.
-
Ok, so when i get there do you have any idea where i go from there?
-
mmmm...
i looked through the bios menu and could not find anything about usb setting or advanced settings
i also then uninstalled my usb drivers in safe mode and reinstalled them..
and nothing has changed
so either is is the usb which i doubt
or its a setting in the bios.. thats off my knowledge...
ill have a better look later though i g2g now..
anyone have any other suggestions?
-
Then the USB ports are probably not 2.0 compatible, they are bringing your hardware back to 1.0. You could try the drive on another machine, or just get a USB 2.0 add on card.
-
My ports are 2.0 compatible, my laptop is near brand new, i bought it new 3months ago
Also in device manager under the usb tree there are two drivers titled "... enhanced host controller ..."
Im going to quickly check the bios again... ill update you in a few minutes..
-
Okay.
<edit> If you can't find anything there, then post the manufacturer and model of the laptop. </edit>
-
Mmmm... its a [HP] Compaq Presario CQ60 Notebook
-
Yes, that one does indeed have USB 2.0.
What transfer rates are you getting that seem to slow?
-
The transfer rates are limited to the OS you are runnning...this was illustrated early on.
-
That model comes with Vista Home Premium. It can handle it.
-
Vista has issues with file transfers ... as i said earlier...
Too many variables and not enough info to determine here.
-
I'm still interested in finding out if the drive enclosure is rated for 2.0, quite a few older ones weren't.
-
Ditto.
-
Also the transfer speed he mentions in the OP is ambiguous. Is he talking bits or bytes.
-
im assuming that it does support 2.0 its a new laptop, so yeah.
bits, bytes? I dont know the difference, but i am sure its bytes.
What more info do you guys need???
Btw thanks for the replies...
-
Have you tried updating the drivers in the device manager?
-
yes i have updated the drivers...
i've already mentioned that aswell ;)
haha
-
What program is telling you what your transfer rates are?
Can you please repost your transfer rate, make sure to maintain the case sensitivity of the suffix. There is a big difference between a bit and a byte.

still need help?
