Title: Free Driver Site .... Use to use Driverguide long ago when free
Post by: DaveLembke on January 28, 2009, 01:34:05 PM
Anyone know of a good site for drivers that is free... Driverguide use to be free years ago and I could use Drivers as user name and ALL for password. Now they want you to pay for the service.

I think its wrong that they accept drivers for free from people and then charge you to download them.... especially since there is still tons of advertisements with the paid service, so they are making money both from users needing drivers and the companies advertising through them.

I have been fortunate to be able to get most drivers direct from the manufacturers, but have also had to perform work arounds that I will not discuss here in detail to grab 1 or 2 needed drivers by use of their 2 or 3 download trial setup and a method that I will not discuss to promote the use of which is not hacking etc, but definately circumventing their Trial Process by use there of.

Hoping there is a Driver Site out there like driverguide that is still free and makes their money from advertising only and/or donations!

I never use driverguide, I've never been able to get a working driver from them, and as you say it's BS that  they want you to pay.

Now I just do a google search- of course I'm sure you've explored that option, though...

What device and OS are you looking for drivers for?

I never update drivers, unless there is something wrong with them.
God forbid any automatic driver scans!

Ok am new here so a little background .For the last year plus i worked the driver guide chat .I had free access to A service that seems to be somewhat berated in several of the forums here. No not driverguide but d....agent
Now I know I helped many get their drivers at no cost using the 'SCAN' as the search tool ,but it would appear that now as the driverguide chat is discontinued ,the people I helped are still mailing me . So there are genuine free help sites out there the problem would appear to be that people are not willing to look .
As i am unsure of the protocol here I will not post a free application , e/book and driver site that has evolved  because of  the demise of driver guide chat.
It's backbone is a manned chat room not a forum . There is not even a donations box on the site

We have a chat....and a forum....

Driver agents and searchers and what not are USELESS.

Perhaps, in the end after paying for the program, they may find drivers, but it's USELESS in the way that those drivers can be obtained for FREE.

As Broni said, drivers don't need to be up[dated. If it works, it's fine.
Title: Re: Free Driver Site .... Use to use Driverguide long ago when free
Post by: Driver-Chat on February 14, 2009, 03:27:23 AM
it seems you missed the point . I am able to provide those drivers for free. To someone sitting in an internet cafe in Mirmar that is a big gift . Often they have no money to use the luxury of time to update their machines . What you may feel is a trifle of time , to them can be many days labour for an hour on the internet.
True to use the agent as a personal tool is a cost but as a time saver it stands on its own . You may wish to peruse this   http://windowssecrets.com/2008/07/31/03-Dont-get-burned-by-driver-update-scams   .
I do not defend the cost but I will defend the fact that they are helping the less affluent in fact all comers for free. I don't see that elsewhere

First of all, drivers DO NOT need to be updated.

And even if there are updates, there is no need to update them if the piece of hardware is working fine.

What's this about? Time? Why are they in a cafe?
Downloading drivers are free. There is absolutely no need for a driver agent or anything like it.

'And even if there are updates, there is no need to update them if the piece of hardware is working fine."
No argument the agent only suggests there is a later driver and provides a link.

"To someone sitting in an internet cafe in Mirmar that is a big gift . Often they have no money to use the luxury of time to update their machines . What's this about? Time? Why are they in a cafe? "
In that situation the only internet access the masses has is via govt controlled cafes . Also the average income is very low and internet costs are high. As I was using this as an example of the fact that not all have the luxury of time or the "Expert " skills required to find out what they have let alone where to find the drivers etc.
Also you appear to be stuck on the thought that I am touting DriverAgent . I am not but am defending it on the basis that DriverAgent is helping these people for free nothing more.

Title: Re: Free Driver Site .... Use to use Driverguide long ago when free

which begs the question as to how these people with limited means can purchase this piece of software that really does nothing but  point the user towards a already free download? Additionally the question remains as to why they would want to update the machines these "govt controlled internet cafes" or how they would afford any form of removable media large enough to store these drivers to bring to their home PC. (I might also add that the government of these countries simply regulates the ISP and imposes country-wide bans on certain sites- thus the control of internet cafes is purely a tertiary effect, and people there DO have internet connections in their homes.

It's simply useless application. Period.

hmm, this reminds me of that similar thread you started Broni, about that scanner... forget the name...

I find it odd how only the scam-type programs have people trawling the net looking for people that don't like it and trying to change their minds completely unsuccessfully... In fact, it's probably better that I forgot the name, goodness knows that they'll hit on it and then we'll be dealing with two BSing trawlers.

Driver Chat is fully independent of Driver Agent and DriverGuide. The services offered here are merely provided voluntary and Driver Chat will not be held responsible. The use of the services offered rests entirely on you, the site visitor. However, the operators of DriverChat.com will do anything to solve your hardware problems.

also, none of the links are suspicious, none of the software links are either- and there are no ads on the site, either.

regardless- it's still advertising the site- generally best to get the admins permission before doing that; he's usually cool about stuff like that though.

That isn't true. The software is from http://www.phoenix.com/en/Consumer/default.htm and it is NOT a free service. Like the others have said. You are trying to capitalize on something that is free from any computer/hardware manufacturer.

Your an affiliate of DriverGuide,com/Pheonix Technologies. You can't advertise as an affiliate on Computer Hope without consent from the owner. http://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/mail.cgi

some av's do find it as a "trogan" because in the definition of the word it is. It looks at the workings of your machine to find out what you have in it. The same as M$ updates are trogans and as you AV's are also as they all look thru your system.
Every site you visit or chat you use has cookies etc that are left on your machine . .

Do you suffer eyeball cramp . In my earlier posts you will note that I stated that "I can provide the drivers at no cost (for free) " The scan if you wish to use it other than thru the site I am on does cost money if you wish to use it  Correct> Wrong in that I never have once said it was a free application  but thru XXXXXX-XXXX.com and the crew that supports it the service is free.
And for crying out loud I have not been trying to sneak in and SELL f'all. I was attempting to point a person who asked for help in that are there any other sites.....

Your an affiliate so that reasoning can easily be argued. Besides, the original question was already being answered so your link, free or not, wasn't needed.

Just found this thread and though I would add my two cents.  I have been helped for free by the program that driver-chat mentioned. (on driverguide.com) I did not have to pay 1 penny.  He asked me to do a scan with the software and then he gave me the links to the drivers.  I did not have to hand out credit card information, name, address, e-mail, or anything else that is personal. The only thing he asked for was the scan ID #.  Hope this clears up some of the misconceptions.

(Just to let you know the reason I had to do the scan was because the driver that was on the manufacturer's website was broken)

Well I see that the opinion of the experts not the needs of the masses rulz again
The link is live in that the scan is how I help .
I do not need the link there but to help others I considered it a service to have the link so that some poor sod would not have to click in and click out of two sites so I could help them.
If then the definition in your eyes makes it an affiliate then so b it .
I might equally question the touting of everest here when the more important links it provides points to pay for sites.

wow... this is progressing quite similar to the Reimage thread... that is, not at all.

The same as M$ updates are trogans and as you AV's are also as they all look thru your system.
Every site you visit or chat you use has cookies etc that are left on your machine . .

And yet oddly enough MS updates and Anti-virus installers aren't caught by any Anti-virus's internal heuristics. So what is DriverAgent doing differently to set it off?

It would appear to be not welcomed here.

you came here to advertise your site. your a "protective" spammer, just like the guy from ReImage. Spending time searching google for negative references to your affiliates and then spending god knows how long trying to "correct" this "travesty" is not what one would consider helping.

"opinion of masses" is not provided by "random other account created by the same person to try to appear to come from a third party benefited by your service". I'd lay money that the IPs are the same, too.

One of the joys of freedom is that each is entitled to an opinion and it would seem that yours is the ruling one so to the opinion I will bow the logic i believe is befuddled.

A better than good chance the reason the av is not triggered by M$ product is the machine is based on M$ product
DUH!
You have given permission for an update so it swims on in.!

The update installer is a Trojan for crying out loud !

Also was interested as to why you did not answer about Everest ?

But as you say this went from a help you to an apolitical bun fight which contrary to popular belief was not my intend , it was girded by the response I received to my post.

As for the random account it was from some one I helped who is now a helper and for his generous but misguided intentions I apologize but by all means check the IP and eat those words.
