Title: Computer Won't Turn Off
Post by: thinkpink1000 on December 31, 2009, 03:00:13 PM
My laptop isn't turning off after I click the start button and then click turn off. The "logging off" screen appears but thats as far as it gets. To turn it off, I have to take the battery out or hold the power button down. Any reasons why it's not working?

I assume this just started. What happened between the last time the system shut down properly and the first time it did not (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?

Boot to safe mode. Can you shut down normally from there?

Yeah, actually I was restarting the computer and it was taking too long so I shut it off by pressing the power button. After that, I got this black screen after logging onto my account but fixed that by restoring my system. Since then it hasn't been turning off properly.

And you didn't think that was worthwhile mentioning?

Vista or 7?

1) Schedule a chkdsk /r and then reboot
2) If needed, Boot to the Vista cd and try the recovery options

Do you know what could be causing this though?
