Title: Help with old laptop and windows 95
Post by: mrhobbeys on March 22, 2008, 01:04:02 AM
Hey dont know if anyone remebers my last post but I have/had a project on this old laptop that has windows 95 I was concerned about saving the data but now I am not I just want to get the most out of this very old laptop.

I have windows 95 CD and windows 98se somewhere. I would like to konw which is best. Or I can do linux the thing is the software I want to run can go on windows or mac so if I do linux it would have to be able to run an emulater (dont know if the hardware will support it).

Here is everything I know about the laptop.

Compaq Armada 1505 Dm
Pentium MMX (i think it is 200mhz)
64 ram

Problem
Windows will not start because I renamed a critical folder.

All advice welcome.

What critical folder? How and why did you do this? Why don't you rename it back again?

I was getting an error about an iso file during start up but because I was trying different things I had read on other sites and now I have a bigger problem because I can no longer start in safe mode. I have found a Win 95 cd
INFO:

Compaq Armada 1505DM

Horrible bios with out normal function so I can not boot from the CD

64 MB mem

100-200 mhz

starts with only mem check afterwards Makes noise that suggest I can boot from the floppy (no floppy drive on my computer, although I could put one in if I have too

after that I see the win 95 screen then a few sec later says:

While initializing device IOS:
Error: An I/O subsystem driver failed to load.
Either a file in the .\iosubsys subdirectory is corrupt,
or the system is low on memory.

When safe mode was working one of the things I tried was renaming the suspected folder as I had read that somewhere else I now know that was a huge mistake.

Please help......

I can get it to work in the comand prompt mode where you see C:\>
I tried selecting the Drive D (CD I think) and typing setup for the Win 95 but that did not work it said there is no directory for the drive. I dont know how to use this system to rename folders tell me what to type and I will do it.

I have a floppy drive now on my computer but all of the disks I have tried will not format so I could not make a win 95 boot disk that I found on bootdisk dot com.

Thanks much
