If I remove the primary hard drive and replace it with a new one, install the old one in an enclosure to make it portable, can I then transfer files from the portable to the new hard drive installed in the computer?
-
If its an IDE drive you can, thought I would then set the jumper to cable select.
-
If it is in an external enclosure it needs to be jumpered as master.
It will show up in My Computer as just another drive.
If this was XP you may also need to read This... (http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,35486.new.html#new)

Stop telling people what works for you but may not work for them.
BTW you first suggested Cable Select...so which is it Slave or CS ? ?

Because he mite have two drives, I suppose the only reason that it works for me is cause I only have one drive in the pc but I thought that he would have problems if it was set to master.

Thanks! Had to jumper it as the master.
