and i just got a message saying "Plug and Play service terminated, computer will restart"  -- but I used the "shutdown -a" command to abort it.  not sure what is going on.

I'd put an external temp probe on that SSD...or touch it briefly....careful.

Even with a fan out a HDD should never get that hot...especially an SSD.

P.S....it's not a BIOS issue so you can rule that out.

Excessive heat can cause the OS to do all sorts of funky things...i'd stop using the drive immediately....if you want any chance of recovering your data.
That being stated you need to check the temps with a physical device ASAP.

i touched it.  it seems the same temp as the other one.  it's not hot at all.  a false read?  i am not sure what to make of this.

Probably a false read then and it should be OK...Try running a Repair Install of the OS then...

okay apparently it's a false read -- a lot of ssd drives have it -- in either case, back to my issue -- apparently it wont let me do a system repair from my disk.  i'll try again and report back with the message.

okay i was able to do that -- let's hope that resolves the issue.  any other theories?
