Title: September monthly poll
Post by: Computer Hope Admin on September 01, 2009, 01:22:27 AM
For the month of September we thought it would be interesting to see how much of your primary hard disk drive you're using. Feel free to comment on how big your primary hard disk drive is, how much total space you're using if you've got multiple drives, talk about freeing disk space, etc.

If you need help determining how much disk space your hard drive is using see the below link.
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000369.htm

All past monthly polls and results can also be found on the Computer Hope poll page (http://www.computerhope.com/polls.htm).

out of 450 or so GB on my primary partition, 241GB is used.

Primary drive is 500GB, used space: 20.2GB.
I fall neatly between two poll options, haha.
I'm voting for 6-20GB though, as if I clean up the junk on here it'll be less than 20GB.

My HDD on my primary PC is big. I chose it so my primary PC becomes my main server, I use a old Dell Dimension PC as a test server, and I build a new PC.

My Primary PC costed $700.
My Next PC will be only $600.

Why?
1. My Primary PC's costs included Windows.
2. My Next PC's costs will not include Windows.

Waaaah! I can't answer the poll right now. I'll check my drive space once I get home.

Question... Is the partition will consider or just the whole size of my HDD?

For my Machine 1:
500GB Samsung SATA HDD (partitioned)
C: Total Size is 195GB, Used Space is 16.0GB, Free Space is 179GB
D: Total Size is 195GB, Used Space is 17.7GB, Free Space is 177GB
E: Total Size is 75.1GB, Used Space is 3.83GB, Free Space is 71.2GB

As you can see on my specs, I have two HDD for my Machine 2.
For my Machine 2:
40GB Seagate Barracuda - Used Space is 10.3GB. Free Space is 26.9GB
40GB Seagate Barracuda - Used Space is 26.0GB. Free Space is 11.2GB

and using 370 GB out of 465 GB on my secondary HDD.

The reason it's so high is because I do lots of media and run lots of virtual machines. :)

what do you mean only 15 percent i had my computer under 700 mb which is under 8 percent and it ran great

i see what he ment now he said 80 i didn't think about that it was actually 76 and you can't have 77 gigibytes on a 76 gigibyte hardrive

i originally thought he ment to say lets say you really have a hundred  gigibyte hardrive i thought he was saying you couldn't go under 15gb
it's actually 7 percent under what the product sas
Title: Re: September monthly poll
Post by: patio on September 05, 2009, 10:15:12 AM
The 7% is not a constant if you do the math...a good approximation though.
Title: Re: September monthly poll
Post by: BC_Programmer on September 05, 2009, 10:16:36 AM
it's because the computer measures a kilobyte as 1024 bytes, a megabyte as 1024 kilobytes, and so on, and the HD manufacturers sell them using standard metric (powers of 10) (so a KB is 1000 bytes, a MB is 1000 KB, etc.

I've got you all covered..    Out of a whopping   40 GB,    ~20 is free  ;D

Although I do have 30 GB hard drive that I dedicate as a file server, but I can't keep it in my system until I add an extra fan, it runs too hot sitting right next to the other drive...

Mark my words, when I get some extra cash I'm going to build a custom system with bigger drives and I will control the world  >>:

It's not an arithmetic constant.

What about- say- 400 Yottabytes?

483,570,327,845,852,000,000,000,000 bytes according to a PC

400,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes if there was a 400TB HD manufactured.

approx. 20% difference.

the reason for this difference has been explained. there simply is no "average" and like most "rules of thumb" woefully inaccurate.

10GB according to a PC is 10*1024*1024*1024, or 10,737,418,240 bytes.

However hard drives are sold differently- a 10GB drive will likely actually be 10,000,000,000 bytes.

EDIT:

last nitpick:

6.68666666666666666666666666666667 percent to be exact

No, to be exact would require infinite 6's.

On my laptop, 36.29GB free of an 80GB drive.  Since the formatted capacity is actually about 74.5GB, used space is less than 40GB.  I believe my desktop computer would also fall in the 21 - 40 GB category, also an 80GB drive.

yes. It is.

 try 2/3 in calculator.

0.66666666666666666666666666666667

but the real answer is .6 repeating.

the 7, is from rounding, since the calculator or whatever is being used can only have a certain number of significant digits.

35gb used in 50gb system partition
30gb used in 50gb 2nd system partition
45gb used in 135gb data partition

270gb used in 500gb image drive

By the way, if you are still storing all of your data on your system partition, don't. If you ever need to restore your system, it's a lot less of a headache if all of your important data is on a separate drive or partition.

Perhaps he means just leave a good amount of free space for the system.

He does, but hes completely wrong.  If you have a 750gb drive why would you only use 25?  Hes been making tons of posts with bad info.

I think he's saying that 25GB is good enough to run a computer without filling it with a bunch of games and programs.

Hes been making tons of posts with bad info.
You don't have much room to talk, do you?

I think he's saying that 25GB is good enough to run a computer without filling it with a bunch of games and programs.
That is what I make out that he is saying is that you only need a 25 GB for the basics without games. I use a 20 GB HDD in my PC.

Hes been making tons of posts with bad info.
He only made one post saying that you only need 25 GB's for the basics. How is that tons of posts?

Let's not have this discussion.

All information has a source.

My only explanation is that you must've been seeing things.  To the best of my knowledge, none of his posts have been deleted, although it wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea.
