Title: How do I reload windows XP?
Post by: alant on September 03, 2005, 08:20:34 AM
Dell Dimension 4400
Pentium 4,1.6GHz
Windows XP Home.
Web browser – Firefox

I can't get my A-drive to work, so I decided to try re-loading Windows.  Are there steps that I can follow to do this?  In the past, I've always called Dell Support which takes a long time.
Also, do I have to make backups even if I'm not reformating my hard-drive?

Why can you not access your Floppy Disk drive?

How to erase my Hard Disk Drive and start over (http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000186.htm).

I've never replaced any internal components before.  Is it easy to replace a floppy drive?  Are there step-by-step instructions and schematics somewhere?

Just connect the new FDD the exact same as the previous FDD. Can't go wrong. Do remember where the red line of the FDD flat ribbon cable went into. Right or left. Red line indicates pin 1. This is important.

I haven't come across one but this will get you into the casing. RAM Reseating & Fitting PDF File (http://images.crucial.com/pdf/dimm_install.pdf)

You'll have to take both side panels off to get at the retaining screws for the drive.

Just be SURE to unplug from the mains and to take proper anti-static precautions.
