My computer has started locking up and freezing. A lot of the times when I use mozilla firefox. Sometimes because of my screensaver. Mostly seems to be when I use Mozilla though. If I click a link or any button in FF it will lock up. Sometimes it locks up randomly, even when I'm doing nothing. Here is a log file from Hijack This

I see no infection.
You have nVidia firewall running. Is your Windows firewall on, or off?
BTW, nVidia built-in hardware firewall is pretty poor, so we'll have to sort it out.
We need some computer info: processor speed, amount of RAM, hard drive size/free space. On-board video, or separate video card?

Nice setup :)
We need to get rid of nVidia firewall, first.
Go Start>Run, type in:
cmd
Click OK.
In Command Prompt window, type in:
sc stop nSvcIp
Hit Enter.
Type in:
sc delete nSvcIp
Hit Enter.
Restart computer. Post new HJT log.

Good, nVidia firewall service is gone...
Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
Read CCleaner instruction here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html, and run CCleaner
You may defrag afterwards.
-
I use ccleaner regularly, even today actually i used it. I will try a defrag
-
I analyzed and it said that it didn't need to be defragged. But I did it anyway. I'll update tomorrow to say if it is still hanging and freezing.
Thanks.
-
Sometimes because of my screensaver.
Some custom made, or Windows one?
Also, try Safe Mode, and see, if it hangs there.
-
The Screen Saver is electric sheep.
http://www.electricsheep.org/
-
Change screensaver to some Windows native.
Use Firefox Safe Mode for a few hours - Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox>Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode), and see, if the freezing still happens.
-
I had two versions of firefox installed, as I was trying the new beta version. I didn't like it so I uninstalled it, and it removed the older version from my programs list. I have a shortcut on my desktop to Firefox, but I can't access safe mode due to it being removed from programs list, and I don't want to reinstall right now. But, Firefox hasn't frozen again yet. If it happens to do so, I will re-install and see how that does.
-
Yeah, installing FF2, and FF3 on the same machine wasn't a good idea, unless you know how to do it.
You'll have to clean that mess up.
This is how to totally uninstall Firefox: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox
-
Did a clean install of Firefox 2. Will update how it all works out, and if any freezes or lock-ups occur.
Thanks
-
As soon as I turned my computer on today and started using Firefox. It froze my computer and firefox quit responding.
-
Go Start>Run, type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK.
Have Windows XP CD handy.

windows file protection that you said to do, I did it, it got to the end says to put in cd2 and i did and it keeps saying it's the wrong cd, i have a genuine copy of xp media center edition.
i cancelled the last two files, then it finished, and nothing else came up.
-
Try Repair install.
-
I tried repair install. Two files from the check were still missing. ngen.exe - entry point not found. The procedure entry point GetRequestedRuntimeVersion could not be located in the dynamic link library mscoree.dll And the other had something to do with .NetFramework 2.0.6.6 something, I didnt get a chance to get the rest. Also since the repair my display is way laggy. Should I reinstall my graphix card?
-
In my opinion, you may be facing Windows reinstall, after reformat.
-
One other thing you could try is to boot into safemode...un-install any .Net frameworks installed from add/ remove programs.
Then boot to regular mode and run the sfc fix Broni suggested above and re-boot again.
-
I just reformatted and re-installed windows not even two weeks ago. I'll try removing .netframework and try again.
-
after repair install a huge list of windows updates arrived. none of them would install. doesnt sound good.
-
Get Ultimate Boot CD: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/, and test your RAM, and hard drive.
-
tried this and updates work now
Re-register the related Windows Update files:
1. Click Start, Run, and input the following commands in the Run textbox: (you can make this simpler by copy/pasting one line at a time, then click OK after each one, then click Start, Run again and repeat with the next command)
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml2.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
You will receive a message stating the process succeeded after you input each command.
After that, visit the Windows Update site again.
