Hi,
I installed novaPDF Lite 7 and tried converting a word file to pdf. It did'nt work but since then I have been facing issues with printing word documents through my laser printer.
1) The 'Print' dialog does not open on pressing Ctrl+P and when i do a quick print i get the following error message.
(http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/5319/worderrormessage01.th.jpg) (http://img651.imageshack.us/i/worderrormessage01.jpg/)
Whereas, I am able to open the 'Print' dialog box in other office applications and print documents.
2) When I try opening any word file from Start Menu>Recent Documents, I am getting the error message as:
(http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/7027/worderrormessage02.th.jpg) (http://img651.imageshack.us/i/worderrormessage02.jpg/)
3) Also, am unable to open any word file by browsing through the folders. Only way I can open a word file is through start menu of Word
4) And for some reasons system restore is also not able to restore to any date prior to the installation.
Have done the following so far;
i) Checked my default printer settings.
ii) Have uninstalled novaPDF.
iii) Have tried uninstalling & re-installing Office 2007, but no luck.
Pls assist me in re-solving this issue.

If you open Control Panel, Printers and Faxes, do you see a printer there that is designated as default? It will be marked with a small black circle with a white check mark inside it. Do you now have more than one printer installed, as shown in Printers and Faxes?
By the way, you can save Word 2007 files as PDF by getting 2007 Microsoft Office Add-in: Microsoft Save as PDF or XPS (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=4d951911-3e7e-4ae6-b059-a2e79ed87041&displaylang=en).

Thanks soybean for your reply & the useful addon.
I checked my printer settings & as stated earlier I am able to print from other office applications such as Excel, Powerpoint etc. with no such issues.
-
Have you checked the .doc file extensions to make sure they are linked to Word?
-
Thanks Allan for replying. Yes .doc file extensions are linked to word.
Also, another problem/ issue I just noticed with Word is that am also unable to use paste function by pressing Ctrl+V.
Have further done the following troubleshooting, but no luck still;
i) Have uninstalled & re-installed my laser printer.
ii) Have tried repairing Office from control panel.
-
Make sure the keyboard shortcuts haven't changed. Click on the "Office Button" in Word (big round button on the top left of the app) then select "customize". At the bottom of the menu is "customize keyboard shortcuts".
-
Its not about keyboard shortcuts only, am also able to open up the print dialog box by pressing the icon from the Quick Access Toolbar. Also, I searched registry manually for all novaPDF entires & deleted them, but again no luck.
An observation:
When I uninstalled & re-installed Office 2007, all my Quick Access Toolbar Settings & other Word Settings came back intact even though I used CCleaner to delete registry of the uninstalled version of Office. Also, all my recently opened documents were there in Word. Similarly, the printer settings & other settings related to print would have also been there & came back with fresh installation.
When I searched through registry, I found entries related to earlier versions of Office still there in registry such as Office 8.0, Office 10.0, Office 11.0.
Now should I uninstall Office & search manually for all office related registry entries & delete them prior to re-installation. But for this I would surely need some assistance to delete the entries.
-
The registry retains data for old Office installations - that's not a problem. Do NOT try to manually uninstall Office registry entries - you'll be there all day and still miss most of them. Download the Windows Install Cleanup Utility (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301). Uninstall Office, run the utility, then reinstall Office and let's see what happens.
-
Okay Boss, point noted. Will update after doing as advised.
Thanks. :)

No need to salute when we're indoors 8)
-
I really appreciate all your effort.
-
You're very welcome, but so far I haven't been much help.
-
Thanks once again for all the support.
But looks like with our combined efforts we will surely see past this. Hope for the best.

Windows Install Cleanup Utility (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301) is basically for Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003.
For Office 2007, it suggests article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971179/, will it help?
-
Sorry - didn't notice that. Don't know - haven't tried. Go ahead and try the "fix it" - I don't see how it can hurt.
-
Article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971179/) also says;
Note This Fix It solution does not remove an Office program that was installed separately from the Office suite. For example, if you have Microsoft Office Professional 2007 and Microsoft Office Visio 2007 installed on your computer, the Fix It solution only removes Microsoft Office Professional 2007 from your computer. Visio 2007 will not be removed.
I have Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007, will it apply & remove registry entries?
-
I would think so. Try it and let's see.
-
Okay then will update on this tomorrow, as am out of office now. Fingers crossed.
-
Just a thought, as you are using word 2007, are your files .doc or .docx ? I also had a problem with a printer not able to print .docx files
-
Thanks patchrunner for replying.
Yes, all am using Word 2007 & there are .doc & .docx files. At present am having issues with printing anything from Word as the print dialog box is not opening.
-
Bad Luck Guys >:( , used Microsoft Fix it (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971179).
Also, after it finished used CCleaner to cleanup registry. But still the same issue; all settings reverted back, even the list of recent documents.
Looking around for more help, found some more articles;

Well, the only thing I can think of is to contact the author(s) of novaPDF Lite and see if this is a situation of which they are aware and if there is a known fix. I'm really out of ideas, sorry.
-
Had contacted them as the first thing, but they have the worst customer support;

Hi,
If novaPDF is completely removed from your system, the problems are not related to novaPDF.
I suggest you reinstall the HP printer driver, or reinstall MS Office.
Kind regards,

C'mon Allan, we can't give up like this. Only thing I can think of the is to get rid of the Office registry entries. Just advice how else we can.
-
Well, I'll give you a long shot suggestion. How tied to Office 2007 are you? Do you have an older version? If so, uninstall Office 2007 and try installing an older version. If everything works well after doing that, you can then try to install 2007 again if you need it.
BTW - I know this is a horse / barn thing, but circumstances like this are perfect examples of why EVERYONE should use a disk imaging utility on a regular basis.
-
Hey Allan, we did it ... Word 2003 Works!!! (|
Uninstalled Office 2007 & re-installed Office 2003 and shoo .... all the problems go. ;D
But missing the style & features of 2007, will surely look around for a cure.
Now all I can figure out is the novaPDF messed up with the printer settings of the Word in the registry, which are still lying in the system inspite of all the above troubleshooting.
Can you assist with cleaning registry of Office 2007 installations?
-
As far as "cleaning the registry", I wouldn't worry about it right now. What you should do is get hold of a disk imaging utility and create an image of your drive. Then you can try to upgrade to Office 2007. If things don't work as expected you can restore the image and no harm done.
Oh - and really glad it's working now :)
-
Thanks Allan, surely that was the next thing on my cards.
Can you suggest a good reliable disk imaging utility?
-
I'm a big fan of Acronis True Image - clearly the best of breed, but it's not free. Some free alternatives: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=0h&oq=free+dis&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLL_enUS304US305&q=free+disk+imaging+software
